I plan to go to steamboat March 20-27. I know that there will be spring skiing conditions but I want to avoid a disappointing trip. Any thoughts?
ken

not sure what you're looking for, but if you read the posts below you might be able to get an idea from some of the thoughts of some areas right around(kinda) steamboat like in the Summit County area(breck, copper, a-basin, etc). i'm only guessing, but steamboat might not be AS crowded as the Summit County spots at this time of the yr. go check out the posts under "Recommendations for Spring 2004 trip (1st week of April)". those are my thoughts.

Steamboat has very different snow conditions from most Colorado resorts. It gets considerably more snow than most and is thus the best resort in the state in December and January most of the time.

The downside is the southwest exposure, which will means instant spring conditions in March if it hasn't snowed recently, like the last 24 hours.

My only trip there was in January, it hadn't snowed in 4 days, and you had to wait until noon to ski those famous Priest Creek trees when the snow softened.

Steamboat is not as bad for spring as Jackson (my comments the 1st week of April thread) because it is not as steep and the off-piste terrain will be skier-packed and mogulled. And I enjoy that skiing ... on Memorial weekend at Mammoth. But in late March it's still winter snow in most Colorado areas, plus Mammoth, Alta/Snowbird, etc.
