We've had a terrific week of snowfall with increasingly drier snow as the storm cycle progressed.
If you read my post from last weekend we had about 4" of new snow to cover the rain crust. On Monday the winds and clouds arrived, and we picked up a couple more inches. Monday night it was supposed to rain in town but at dawn a foot of wet snow had fallen. On Tuesday morning it was carnage. Tree limbs were jumping off under the weight of the snow. The roads were slippery rinks and there were widespread power outages. Over 18" fell at Bachelor and they were running on auxiliary power. Not bad riding, but the few lifts open were way crowded with jonesing locals and all the students that didn't have to go to school, as all classes were cancelled.
"Big Wednesday" was on everybody's mind as another 12" fell overnight on top of the 18" + 5" during the day before. And OBX and NWX were now on the schedule. All of a sudden we're so back in the game as the storm trajectory is aimed directly at the Cascades of Central Oregon. Dudes were riding their big day boards and skis and smiles were everywhere.
Wednesday night I asked my gf Sally if she wanted to go have dinner at Elk Lake Lodge. "Sure" she said, so we trailered my just-overhauled Polaris RMK 700 up to Dutchman Flat snowpark, which is basically across the street from Bachelor at 6300 feet. We sno mo'ed the 11 miles down and had a nice rib dinner washed down with Elk Lake IPA from Bend Brewing. Coming back I couldn't help but notice the super high quality snow falling at 18 degrees. Thursday was going to be another big winner so I was packed well before bed time.
As anticipated, Thursday morning was chronic with 8" of blower over the feet that had fallen in the prior two days. No wind and face shots galore. The West Bowls of NWX were sick. Easily the best day in recent memory. I'm sorry conditions weren't this good where you were because Bach was the spot this week. Just when you think it can't get any better…the forecast was calling for clearing and Summit was on the schedule for Friday! Woot.
OK, bluebird and three more inches, giving us a storm total of 56". And so with five new feet covered by 7% fluff the Summit Chair opened around 9AM. Wow, what a week!
View of the "Moraine" from Sunrise Express.
Skiers cutting up the fluff near the bottom of Summit Chair.
Schubwa riding up NWX doing a hot lap back to the Summit Chair.
Robert Halderman enjoying the Backside.
Here's Rob on a lower Backside run approaching the catchline.
Schubwa floating his Lib Tech through some soft stuff.
Me again on the upper part of the West Bowls (just above the top of NWX)
Ahhh, what a nice day. Tomorrow=Backcountry
