Since they had only received 2-4 inches of new snow, we were in no rush to get there early and planned on a 10:00 A.M. meeting at Super Bravo. We met up and headed to check out Murphy's Glade and Lower Organgrinder. It's fortunate that they got the new snow, because below the new stuff it seemed as if everything was hard and frozen. It also seemed that the new snow helped to cover some bare spots that were starting to appear in the woods. It was just a patch though, and you could tell that the woods were still thin on cover in some areas. The surface we found on Murphy's was not bad, but you had to watch out for areas where the new snow had been pushed away too much and exposed the hard surface below. Coverage was good at least (on most of the snowmaking trails). Off to the sides of the trails where they had not groomed, the new snow had a very light crust on it. It was a fun crust that you could carve right into and it was a cool sensation. First tracks were the best though, because if you had second tracks your "cushion" was gone and you'd contact the hard stuff. We did a run on Snowball and found similar conditions. The rest of the day was spent over at North Lynx / Gate House; similar conditions again. Those conditions lasted until some time in the afternoon when a cold blast moved in and everything started to firm up. That was enough for us to to call it a day, so we headed for home. Perhaps we'll get some new snow as this next front passes through.
