Back to the beautiful Big Wood River Valley for the Boulder Mountain Tour skate ski race. We go every year to this ultra-competitive 32K down valley marathon. Last year I rode out with the fellows and nobody was interested in going alpine skiing at Baldy. What? So this year I booked the condo at Elkhorn and drove out early so I could ski on my favorite alpine hill.

I just think Sun Valley is such a beautiful place. Yeah, it never snows, but when you're from Mt Bachelor you don't really want any clouds or wind when you're here.

Michelle Halderman enjoying the fun in the sun over on the Warm Springs side. They haven't had much snow this season but the snowmaking coverage is outstanding and remember, the sun is out.

They have bumps here. I don't go in them anymore. Steep groomers or the Roundhouse.

Speaking of the Roundhouse, here is the new (Roundhouse) Dopplemeyer Gondi. Michelle checking it out. The skiing was very good with 1" overnight and, of course, good grooming. If you're over (fill in the blank) and want nice weather, fine surfaces and good dining, this is your place!

The Lookout lift at the top services the bowls. I was here two years ago for a rocking La Nina pow storm and hit this right as they dropped the ropes. Heavenly.

These are the runs over on the Seattle Ridge part of Baldy.

Looking up Greyhawk. This is what I like about Baldy, on alpine skis, it's the great sustained pitches and firm winter snow. So nice.

Michelle, Peter Menefee (now living in Sun Valley) and Robert Halderman smiling half way down Grey Hawk. We took the Challenger Chair (3,142 vertical feet) back up. You get lotsa vert here, but I never keep track. I'm too busy yacking or rubber necking at the scenery.

This is looking back down Grey Hawk. The runs are long and fast. What a mountain! Too bad it doesn't snow more.
On Friday we went and skied the Harriman Trail from up by the Galena Lodge. We did the first 6K of the race course and then drove down and skied the final 5K or so at the finish to get warmed up. I had a good race Saturday considering I had a pretty bad cold. We packed up and left on Sunday and I always see these guys kiting out at the end of the Camas Prairie, about 30 miles above Mountain Home...

I started kiting again last summer and we were stoked to watch the guys flying big kites in light breezes. But the surfaces were wonderful with a couple inches of cold powder over a firm base.

Don't laugh, these guys were riding up pow hills and turning on the way down. It's quiet, no engines, and powered by the wind.

Looks like you got at it. Every time I've been there it's been pretty firm, if not icy. It was sunny though!

My trip for spring break 1983 had a 100-inch base during Sun Valley's second highest snow year (remember most of their snow comes on a SW flow from California, they got quite a bit 2-3 weeks ago). Also about 9 inches new the second day of my week. This year's NASJA annual March 24-28 will be the first time skiing Sun Valley since then. In terms of terrain and fall lines (but not weather!) you could argue that Revelstoke is Sun Valley without the Sun.

when you're from Mt Bachelor you don't really want any clouds or wind when you're here.
With similar scale, some similar fall lines and twice as much snow, I'll take Mt. Bachelor. Nonetheless Sun Valley has sufficient attributes to be on any ski junkie's checklist.

Sun Valley looks exactly as it was when I was there...low snow, but still skied well. Doubtful I'd go back, but glad I got to check it out.
