November 30 is somewhat a late beginning for Sutton, but is was worth the wait. Only 4 trails were open but I skied 37 during the whole weekend.

All water bars were not yet covered in most closed slopes, but a 40-80 cm cover ensured that we hit no rocks. All intermediate terrain was accessible from the main quad, as well as the steep runs of the lower half of sector #4west. 5 to 30 minutes hiking was necessary to get the longer runs from either the 3/4 of 4west or from summit. Only few people hiked, and first tracks we guarranteed all day long to anybody who made the effort!

Though the lower-elevation snow got sticky on saturday afternoon, conditions remained great. Sunday was my best powder day of 2002, as we received 8" of fluffy, dry powder. Because of the absence of crowds, we had the chance to ski all day long (8:30 to 4PM) in knee-deep powder over a 40/60 cm unpacked base. Sometimes, we would pass through a pack of light, yet wind-blown, snow that could be as high as 5 feet. Yep, we ate a lot of snow, but it's what the doctor had prescribed after 7 months of starvation!
