Yeah that farg'in sucks. I am going to be out in Cali for Xmas visiting the pods. I was hoping to hit up some BC in the tahoe area. Not looking good so far. Of course, Tahoe can get 15ft of snow in under two weeks...

And summer has finally come to SF/Bay Area.....temps almost to 80F. Much warmer than July...

Yeah, looks like Thanksgiving is a big bust. But so was 02/03 and 03/04...until the 10 feet showed up in mid-December.

Waitng for the jet stream to change.

Detail breakdown of Mammoth Jan. 1 conditions over past 37 years:

0-30% open: 16%
50-70% open: 11%
80-90% open: 11%
100% open: 62%

Detail breakdown of Mammoth Jan. 1 conditions over 15 years <20% open Nov. 15:

0-30% open: 40%
50-70% open: 7%
80-90% open: 13%
100% open: 40%

This provides a good illustration of the degree the odds move by having the first quarter of the 11/1-12/31 time period be dry. And why you increase your odds of success by holding off booking trips until the season starts.

I would guess the figures above would be a little better at Kirkwood and Sugar Bowl, about the same at Alpine Meadows, and worse elsewhere in the Sierra.

There were another 7 seasons right around 20% on Nov. 15 most of which were not too bad by Jan. 1. But I'll stand by the 40% prediction because:

1) Mammoth isn't 20% open, it's 5% and it wouldn't be open at all if not for snowmaking.
2) It isn't Nov. 15, it's now Nov. 24 and no new snow is in sight. I will probably pull the plug on my Mammoth weekend Dec. 16-18.
