After making the mind numbing drive from Dallas on Fri.,we arrived early on Sat morning (to get a jump on the holiday masses) to the sound of avalanche control work being done. They had received about four inches of heavy wet graupel. Luckily for us this continued most of the day which thinned out the holiday lemmings. The ridge was completely open with the exception of Kachina peak. All of the expert terrain had more snow than I have ever seen it with before (3rd year I have been here). The only complaint I have about the area is the choke points on the lower mountain. Until the snow started again on Sunday, the area where all the trails come together at the base of Al's run looked like the beaches at Normandy. By 1200 on Sunday it began to dump again with 30-45 mph wind so the crowds were thinned. All in all an excellent weekend. Twin trees chute is not to be missed with fresh snow in it. Although the hike was about all a flatlander like me could take.
