A great storm started New Years Eve and continued all night. The storm started warm and helped cover rocks. Thank you global warming! Still fluffy and better than the best of Tahoe. Then it got cold by morning.......
However, the mountain only reported 2-3" at 7am -- but there was at least 6" in the streets of Telluride walking to the lifts at 8am (I hate storms that creat snow holes around the measuring stakes). It was easy to see powder was everywhere and the ski corp was wrong. Frankly, it snowed all day on New Years and about 10-12" fell -- up to 18" in the wind-loaded areas like the top of 9 and 12.
At 9am, there were about 10 people in line when the lifts opened. (Telluride is not Alta or Vail where the lines are huge after a dump). I was on the lift in 20 seconds. Then no one. And it remained uncrowded almost all morning. Weird. This is the busiest week of the year?!
Prospect and Gold Hill were in hold all morning. Therefore, I skied chairs 9 and 6 -- alternating. Among the goods were -- early Plunge, Joint Point (20+ wind-loaded), Local's Glade (everything -logs- now covered with 14+), Apex, Zulu, Silver Glade. Chair 9 had better skiing than 6 due to winds. The glades were amazing!
Next, training for the Torino Boardercross started -- in other words, everyone started lining up for the gate to Prospect/Gold to drop at 11am-ish. The normal delayed frenzy occurred. You are warned NOT TO TURN when the rope drops for first. As typical, mahem occurred -- powder all over, a lost appendage or two and snowboarders lost speed on traverse to get tossed aside.
I did well enough in bordercross to score chair 4 on Gold and first tracks on Little Rose-to-Millions. Excellent! After another Dynamo and Andy's Gold -- I went to Prospect Bowl for secret and not-so-secret runs.
At 2pm, certain woods were still untracked (Trommers) and face shots were rewarded for the final open turns.
Also, patrol was king enough to open almost all of the front-side for the return home.
At 3pm, Local's Glade still had fresh for most of the 1500 vert to West Drain and Jaws was a recently opened powder fest.
Telluride is open -- wide and clear. Milk Run is still closed for eventual snowmaking and a run or two off of chair 4. Most rocks are now covered (beware of the reef bands on Mak'm and Andy's though).
