Temporary lift ticket deal at SLC Costco

I was at the downtown Costco yesterday. The guys from Geigerrig (Ogden company) are there this week, repeating the same deal they had last summer. That time, I bought a Costco membership just for this and ended up switching most of my grocery shopping to Costco.

Here is the deal:
For $65 you can get one of their very fine hydration packs. The gimmick is the hand-pump that allows you to pressurize the water so "you don't suck". But pressure accomplishes more than that:
The pack sloshes much less when the bladder is half-full. You can drink when you are panting on a bike. You can add an in-line filter (you ninny). You can hose down Fido, etc.
It also has a better-designed bladder opening. In short, a good product that sells for substantially more in stores.

The lift tickets come as a "Ski Passport" that includes many resorts around the country. Most of which are too far apart. But here in Utah you can ski Snowbasin, Canyons and Sundance for free, one day each, this season. Any one of those alone would pay for the purchase.

They're there through Sunday.

This explains why I kept seeing those passports when I was checking the SLC craigslist! Some guys were advertising the 3-pack of Snowbasin, Canyons, and Sundance for prices ranging from (I think) $35 up for the whole book. I have to admit I was suspicious it was some kind of scam, but I guess they're legit.

A standard small hydration pack at Costco is all of $20. It's what I use for most day hikes and very late season skiing. I can take the bladder out of that pack and put it in the larger pack I used in Antarctica/Patagonia.

Well... they're legit for the original purchaser, not so much off of Craig's List. They could ask to see the pack (both "Passport" deals I've seen had this requirement) but didn't when I claimed my Snowbasin ticket. Still, I had a picture on my phone of me holding the pack, in case they did.

I haven't seen that pack and couldn't comment. But my take on this kind of equipment is that it has to be well thought-out and very easy to maintain-clean or it's not worth any money. Geigerrig is like that. One can always carry a water bottle in a backpack otherwise.

hmmm.. might have to beeline it to SLC on Sunday before they close... I've been wanting a new hydration pack, anyway. The one Tony is talking about is what I've been using for 5 yrs, and it still works fine, but it's getting a little ragged. I wouldn't mind having another one.

Any of you locals know of any better deals currently than what can be had at Canyon Sports for the usual areas? If you haven't heard, parents and I will be out from March 3-11.

I'm not a local, but on my last few trips to SLC, I've ben able to score some cheap tix by checking the local craigslist and searching ''lift tickets''. Be sure and ask if the tix have any restrictions, and see if you're comfortable. Also, since some of the resorts now use RFID tix, so you cannot tell until you get to the scanner if they've been used, I guess there is some risk, but it's worked out for me.

Greeting from Gundy with GEIGERRIG! I noticed this post and wanted to let you all know that we will be starting a new round of show at the Utah Costco Locations in May. GEIGERRIG will also be adding a lot of pages to the Mountain Passport this year. We will be adding two more Utah resorts and another in Driggs Idaho...hint hint. If the current passport did not inspire a road trip then this will for sure!
