Days 34-35: A Montana Classic!

When one thinks about Montana to go skiing, I imagine Teton Pass Ski Resort is the area one would dream about. Small, remote and very friendly. We hit the hill at the tail end of a 30" dump. Conditions were excellent.

It's 35 miles from the closest motel. A very nice one, the Stage Stop Inn. $55 rooms with an indoor pool, breakfast, and an area for folks to imbibe.

We had a group of 12 make the journey.

Here is the double.

Saturday of President's Weekend, we pulled into the lot at 10:15, and got a front row spot.

They added a small poma to access some really neat terrain to the north.

It snowed all Saturday. We awoke Sunday to bluebird.

After a couple of runs, some folks hiked above the lift to "54 Turns". A 20 minute hike well worth it; not quite 54 turns, about 30, but big and fluffy!

If you need something to do between Big Sky and Whitefish:

An arcticle about the new owner: http://missoulian.com/business/local/article_545c3a56-ce87-11df-9658-001cc4c002e0.html

I'm looking forward to my 2nd day there this season and wondered what the new terrain was like. I'm doing it on the way between staying with friends in Philipsburg and a a stop in Whitefish.

The new lift opened new terrain but not vertical EMSC, so it is still only 1100ft. For next season they are going to have another lift up the mountain which which increases it quite a bit and should bring in some excellent skiing.

While vertical is modest at the moment and 250 inches is not a huge amount of snow, this is another example that MRA is not the only potential ski area owner interested in this kind of place.

If he puts a lift to the top or near the top, it will definitely transform it from the one trip a season novelty to a real destination, at least for the Northern Rockies skier. The sidecountry/backcountry access is endless.

It's a mix of cut runs along with some glades (mostly tight turns through some burnt trees) and then a 2-3 minute run out at the end to the double chair. There's some fun stuff for sure and we found untracked all weekend over there.

They claim that the new lift this spring will add another 700ft giving 1700ft lift served with an additional 500ft hike to the summit.

I'm going on a Tuesday so the place should be deserted then!!

Turner Mountain is my final Montana ski area that I will hit the following Friday.

Where do you spend your time skiing most coldsmoke?

Yeah, it might just be you and the lifties!

Have a pass at Big Sky where we ski 60-70 percent of the time. We love going to the smaller areas though. Might be at Discovery or Maverick this weekend as the rest of March will be Big Sky.

I was panicking when I read their new schedule for March! Had to read it 3 times before I worked out they were actually opening on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Saves me having to change my plans. Pure chance I planned a Tuesday there!
