Day 37: Livin' large.
Still waiting for new snow, it was time for another change of scenery this past Sunday, this time to Deer Valley.
Members of the Alta Powder Posse -- Bobby Danger, AmyZ,TheOtherAmy, jojo_obrien, rdwore, Mrs. Admin and yours truly -- headed back to the Wasatch Back for the second Sunday in a row, and we skied opening bell to close. What we found were firm, fast groomers -- we didn't dare venture onto the ungroomed aside from a couple of forays into the trees adjacent to Daly Chutes -- and lots of big ol' bumps on ungroomed marked runs. Groomers were blemish-free, although with the occasional slick spot. Some of the ungroomed, natural snow runs were sporting underbrush poking through, but it's plainly obvious that extensive summer grooming keeps Deer Valley very skiable even in the low-tide conditions of last weekend.
We enjoyed warm sunshine, exquisite food ('natch!), crazy real estate viewing and some different terrain. We hit up Bald Mountain early before its higher traffic levels worked off the fresh corduroy, and spent mid-day on Empire Canyon and Lady Morgan once it had softened in the bright sunshine with temps in the low 40s. We finished up with a couple of runs all the way down to the base of the Jordanelle Gondola adjacent to U.S. 40. It was a nice change of pace.
Remember, conditions will improve markedly with this week's major pattern change and snowstorm.
