The best thing...

?The best thing that you?ve ever had has gone away.?

I really miss being unemployed. For two whole years, I lived for nothing but playtime. Yes, it was quite a selfish endeavor. Yes, it was irresponsible. And yes, it was worth every bit of what I deal with now.

For now is not so bad. I?m still here. Yeah, I struggle through two jobs to get by, but I still have some fun.

June was always among my least favorite months of the year, until I moved within close proximity to hundreds of peaks over 13k. Now, June is my favorite month to ski. The days are warm and sunny. The lines are still filled in. And in June in Colorado, you don?t mess around with insect repellent. I wouldn?t even know where to buy it. But I can find sunblock in any convenience store. SPF 50, anywhere. It?s like wiping your ass with silk, I love it.

It was almost June 1st when I got home late, got a message and returned the call. Ever get a late night call from a friend in a drunken stupor? I was ?that guy?, and quickly sobered when Dave told me: ?We?re going to ski near Climax Mine tomorrow. Mark is picking you up at 4:45 in the morning.?

Okay??

?I sent you an email with a picture I took two weeks ago. We?re going to ski from that little pointy rock at the summit.?

And that we did.

That?s Dave.

This is Mark:

And those are shots I took with my new Canon A95. For $164, I snagged this 5 megapixel beauty, with all its manual control and 256mb of memory to boot. All brand new, in the box.

Anyone into cameras wouldn?t pass on a deal like that, especially one who spent zero dollars on passes, lift tickets and equipment for a turn-filled season.

It was on Bartlett Mountain, elevation 13,550, that I remembered what it was like to do this kind of thing three to four times per week.

To enjoy these simple pleasures on an almost daily basis?. priceless.

But then I found out something I always knew: This is priceless, regardless of its frequency.

And it doesn?t matter how often you got out, it?s the quality of the memory that matters in the end.

Racing down a big wide chute like a bat out of hell. Newish snow spraying wildly every time you turn. Rollerballs of snow chasing you down. Yeah, that?s the good stuff. That?s the beauty.

So with that, I bid you adieu. I will seek out more of this thing we call?. something, but in the meantime, I?ll always have these things to reflect upon, ponder, and smile.

That makes me wonder:
Why am I sitting at a desk, inside, with the outside temp at almost 30c, in an area compleatley devoid of anything that could even remotely be considered a hill?

That's right:

I'm a sucka.
