The Bird on Sunday

I had so much fun skiing Alta on Saturday with skidog, that I had to go up to Snowbird on Sunday with Mr Dangerous. Bobby wanted to check out the cirque and as usually he knew right where to go.

The climb definitely got the heart pumping.

We went up into the mouth of Jaws which gave us probably three quarters of a Great Scott run.

The cirque had a lot more snow than I expected.

Had a nice run out the lower cirque. It can't be skied right to the bottom like Alta, but we did not run out of snow till maybe 30ft shy of the condos where we parked.

Just another day in paradise - Jon

Looks good! At least someone went skiing and wrote a report. I'm getting tired of seeing my own rants about meetings and such.

Why does the SnoTel (Snowbird) site report 3", presumably at the base and nearby Alta is reporting 26"? :^o They're what, a mile away from each other? Telejon said they hiked out right at the end, so I'm assuming the 3" report may be closer to the truth. Locals, what gives?

Alta's site is at ~9800' in upper Collins. Are you referring to the Snowbird site atop Gad 2? If so, there's no way that reading is correct.

Where is Alta reporting 26"? According to the NRCS site, there is no Alta SnoTel installation.

The Alta site is a UofU study plot and the Snowbird site is an official SnoTel site - for whatever all that is worth.
Of greater import though is that the Alta site is in a well protected spot in some fairly dense trees whereas the Snowbird site is quite a bit more in the open. Add in that these last two storms had some extremely localized activity, and the disparity can make some sense.

preparing too lay down the love !!! the skiing was faboulous in the upper cirque and in the mid cirque and farther down the hill on andersons .. suprise anyone skinning up the peruvian gulch would first see andersons and think no way is it possible to get a clean line .. knowing that andersons is almost scree field from wall to wall knowing how far to go out across towards tower two of the tram is extremely important - cause it's scree on the far end too. I and tele john stopped at the bottom of tower three chute and could find no reason why we shouldn't have booted up tower three chute and skied it.. it looked as plush as anything in the upper or mid cirque. we skied down the road that goes out too whodunnit nice big snow drift the length of the road right down the center eighteen or twenty inches thick impossible to hit bottom. I took alook at alta before completely commiting to the bird with john. everything at alta is astetically perfect including the fact that the place looks like it's open but there not .. it's still completely hammered !! only saw three other people in the peruvian cirque and none came as high up to the ridge as we did. silver fox is looking super sweet over there you must know where to ski or you can get into some nasty situations to quickly to realize your situation has gone to sh-- .. nice pictures john hope to take many more this early season love these pre lift days..
