The north east is melting!!

So I'm outta here..arriving tuesday afternoon...guess I'll have to get the leftovers wednesday. Cancelled my Tux trip as it will be an icicle..not a fan of huge icicles...huge fan of huge dumps.

Like I mentioned to you on the phone tonight, Wednesday should be epic. A lot of terrain won't open tomorrow and will be sitting there waiting for you on Wednesday.

The LCC Road looks like it'll be an issue tomorrow. It just closed for the night 2 minutes ago. Alta/Snowbird goes into full Interlodge at 9 p.m. No word on when it might reopen tomorrow - no one's posting estimates.

As a result we're heading north to Snowbasin tomorrow. No road closures to deal with and countless uninhabited acres. Watch for a post tomorrow night.

Too bad on the road closure, happened to me the last time I came out so I ended up at Brighton. Guess Wednesday will be the day!

From Alta's site @ 6:30a:

At this time there are no plans to open the road before noon. We will have an update on the road after avalanche control work this morning. The Town of Alta is under interlodge.

Holy Crap! Alta's website is rerporting 26 inches, with 8 more likely to come! That is one big storm!!! Looks like Alta will get to 500 after all. Where was this weather when I visited Utah?

One of the reasons I have stayed at my job is that I can leave almost at a moments notice...so I sit..and watch...then go.

That's only the 24 hr total - look instead at the storm total. It's 32" as of 6:30a - with another 12" - 18" by the time things wind down on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday, I'm certain there will still be significant terrain closures in effect. If I had to place a bet, I'd most certainly expect Devil's Castle, definitely East Castle, probably Backside and Baldy Shoulder, very possibly Ballroom (depends on the stability of all that stuff above Ballroom) to all be closed. Over at the area to the west, I wouldn't be surprised if Mineral Basin remains closed along with Road to Provo and High Baldy. There could also be a delayed opening for the Peruvian Gulch side as well.

All this is on the assumption that it continues snowing heavily today and tonight.

There's an entirely different, simpler way of looking at this - in the last week. we've had over 7 feet of new snow; 6 of that fell in April.

Also, Alta will not be opening today. The town of Alta remains under hard interlodge. The only operating lift today in LCC is Snowbird's Chickadee lift, and Snowbird is on strict straight-line travel elsewhere in the complex.

BTW...What does "interlodge" mean?
You are not allowed outside of whatever building you are in, even to go to your car. It's short for "Inter-lodge travel is prohibited." Violation is a class B misdemeanor and carries a fine and possible jail time if you piss off the judge or were particularly flagrant. Same as ducking a rope line and entering a closed area.

Really - so you can't go anywhere, not even to see a next door neighbour? Why/when is it invoked? Is it to keep people off the roads so they can be cleared? Kinda sounds like House Arrest. What happens if there is an emergency - like a fire?

It's to keep people from dying in avalanches. I heard that a slide on Superior reached the Cliff Lodge today.

Exactly as Staley said - to keep folks from dying in an avi. The 5 lodges at Alta are all situated in avi zone shadows, but the travel between them and most of the parking is fully exposed. It's invoked whenever conditions warrant, the most frequent being in the mornings after a storm for a few hours when they shell the LCC northern ridgeline.

Pretty much.

Oh don't be ridiculous!

So Alta is now reporting 49 inches as a storm total. What are peoples thoughts on crowds tomorrow? I feel that maybe a lot of people blew off work today hoping to get up and burned another day or two last week. Well, at least I'm hoping this is the case. By the way skied Park City today, and it was by far the deepest skiing of my life. Probably 35-40 up on Jupiter, and well done PC ski patrol for getting EVERYTHING opened by 10:30 am =D>

A lot did but a lot didn't, so it will be crowded, no matter what. The big wild cards are tonight's snowfall and the avi situation for the road tomorrow - right now there is no estimated opening time - that won't happen till tomorrow morning. How fast they're able to open terrain is anyone's guess right now.

Tell us all about it tomorrow - I get to do a multi-variant cluster analysis on 200 user surveys I conducted tomorrow morning.

Alta is a town with an official population of 395. There are a lot more than 5 buildings. There are 5 lodges (inns/hotels/whatever you want to call them) that offer overnight lodging and meals.
