The old beacon, shovel and probes +++ Avalung!

I found out about Avalung from reading the avalanche stories. One fella survived completely burried for 30 minutes before dug out while heliskiing. 3 others were not so lucky and 9 only had partial submersions, airway
out of the mix.

I looked it up. Very interesting! I saw that they are like 200.00 from Black Diamond. I then saw a Avalung II on eBay new starting at 89.00 for a bid. I bid 92.00 and am sure in 8 days I will be out bid. I have to patrol avalanche areas. I think this is more useful than a beacon! Carol

i understand the avalung has saved lives but, it also gives many skiers an attitude that by using it they can take more risks and survive.
i sell them but am definately not a fan of them. i guess it would give you more time to think about death while under the snow hoping and praying that someone digs ya out.

I agree. I am a very conservative skier. I used to race long ago and always held back, got bronzes. I did not want to let it all rip for the gold and end up in a chair. I always loved to ski to get away from it all and be with nature in the mountains, good friends, family, etc. A sort of tree hugger type, but, not a tree hugger as a skier! I am ultra conservative. :) Carol

Nope. All it does is buy you time while your partners locate you - actually, locate your beacon - and dig you out.

And although mentioned before and elsewhere, it bears repeating: if you have to use your beacon, probes, shovels, and avalung, you've already seriously effed up. The avi gear doesn't keep you safe - it just mitigates the situation and maybe enables the recovery of a live body. What keeps you safe is the knowledge, training, and judgment that keeps you out of an avi in the first place.

I think that is excellent thinking. I am a patrol and am responsible for other people in trouble. That means I am a bit sacrificial. All I ask is that no one dig me out if it is likely that I will be seriously handicapped like a quadriplegic or on tubes or machines for life, etc. I would like to be left for the funeral in Spring! Carol :)
