The ultimate Alaskan heli-ski adventure?

looks interesting. skiing/riding would be sick. accomadations would be "different" (crap).

am i the only one who thinks that staying on that boat for 4 days would get old real fast? sure, you get to ride some sick terrain, BUT:

the price for that "Sound to Summit" trip is like $5800 for what, 4 day adventure? woohoo!

the price of a 6 night 7 day heli trip without staying on that piece of crap they call a boat would be even less. $5400 single occupancy.

seems like a no brainer to me, but different strokes for different folks i suppose. for me, $2000 top dollar to go on that "Sound to Summit" trip and stay on that boat for 4 days. that'd be 500/day, and that'd be a gift from me to them. they eat/serve seafood all the time because it's a huge resource that cost's them nearly nothing, and they call it/charge as if it's a luxery (it is for most people i guess, but can you take 4 days of it?). seems like you're getting charged for a whole lot of stuff that you're not getting. opportunity cost is just to great. it would be quite an adventure to do, but i just can't justify the price. it's a new gig and maybe they're just trying to find out what people will pay.......testing the supply and demand waters. if they only do two trips a year, like this one in April, then sure, they might be able to fill those spots open with "people who are looking for that experiance". argh! enough about this. great riding. TOO MUCH MONEY. bottom line.

thanks for the link though. i'll be looking into a heli trip for next year, or some other big trip. good to get an idea of what's out there.

It is a lot of money, way too much for me. But to be fair they're talking about attempting first descents every day...it's not really fair to compare this to a standard heliskiing operation.

Not the first trip of this type. http://www.bellacoolahelisports.com/SeaToSky.html
and http://www.seatoskyholidays.com (might be the same operation).

Definitely big bucks, but more luxurious accommodations than the boat in Alaska. The attractions would be:
1) First descents
2) Greater mobility given the weather reputation. Some of those B.C. fjords may be long enough to get away from coastal fog.

One of my dreams is that someone will offer this on an Antarctic Peninsula cruise. Remember the thread last year about skiing on every continent?

If I were willing to spend that kind of $ I'd be inclined toward the B.C. yacht. But there are some new land-based heli operators in both B.C. and Alaska where you also might get some first descents.

Having heli-boarded in the Chugach, worked on many a nasty fishing boat, and spent several months living aboard boats in Prince William Sound?..I?d have to agree with the H-Dog on this one. For the amount of money it costs to heli, the last thing in the world you want to do is come back to a boat like that.

Make it different trips:
1st?Heli out of Valdez, Cordova, or Girdwood. The first 2 get you the insane terrain but minimal accommodations and very good chance that you may not even get out (no fly days are common). Girdwood is slightly tamer but the hotel is sweet, and if you can?t fly because it?s puking snow you?ll be styling in freshies at Aleyeska.

2nd?Get on a boat in the sound, for as much time as you can afford. Everyday is a nature show orcas, whales, eagles, otters, seals, deer, bear?. And the sickest fishing, salmon, halibut, cod, yellow-eye??

How about a boat like this instead?

Very nice  ...I couldn't access the link you provided so I couldn't find out how much this type of trip would cost, but I'm sure I can't afford it :? !

On a slightly related note: I was in NYC on Tuesday and drove past the Intrepid on the west side. The QE2 was docked right next to the Intrepid and it made the aircraft carrier look very small. That is one big cruise ship!
