This should be right up Tony's alley

I saw a PCMR post that they were changing their official base-depth and year-to-date totals now that Jupiter is open and they can access the snow-stake there to take measurements. They indeed have and both numbers increased significantly. Now, setting aside the truthfulness of reporting PCMR totals from Jupiter: how can they possibly have YTD numbers if they haven't been able to get to the stake to take measurements?
Are they pulling it out of their behinds, as I suspect they are?

That was the very same post I was referring to. It says they didn't report from Jupiter because they couldn't access it. So, it is not automated in some thingimajig way. The question remains: how can they have year-to-date numbers, then?

I am aware that PCMR has the 2 sites. Like most ski areas with more than one (Jackson, Alyeska), they like to report in-season from the one that gets the most snow. I get monthly totals at the end of the season from both. SNOTEl sites and remote automated sites in general do not measure snowfall. They measure water content of the snowpack by weight. So I agree that Evren's question is legitimate. How can there be a season-to-date snowfall from a location without human access for part of the season? I will ask the question when I call at the end of the season.

PCMR's website numbers looked out of line low so I had been using The Canyons as a better estimate this season even though I have no idea how Canyons measures.

I just posted that question in the comments section of the blog in the link you provided. We'll see if they respond.

I thought they might just be extrapolating from the base-depth, using the base-depth/YTD ratio at Summit but that comes to 104" not 117".

PCMR responded to Marc_C's comment on their page:
Thanks for the question. As part of our duties in the Snow Safety Department, we make an effort to get to Jupiter almost daily even when it is not open. It's important to acquire and record the most accurate data we can especially during storm events.
Color me surprised: they have been going all the way out to Jupiter every day (on snowmobiles?) just to take measurments but just not reporting the numbers because why? that wouldn't be right? Even though they in their own words, "obviously [couldn't] access the Jupiter stake" before. Uh-huh.

I agree Evren seems strange. Although if they (pcmr) said from the begging that they went daily for snow safety i would buy it. Also I think there snow total fro jupiter is somewhat accurate. I asked my father who works up there as a liftie on saturdays, he thought it was accurate
