This Weekend

Land in SLC Thursday night and skiing Friday through Sunday. Haven't seen many reports from outside of LCC recently, likely go to Alta on Friday.

Is the coverage decent yet at Solitude? How about the Ogden resorts?

No complaints, forecast looks promising.

Can't answer personally, I haven't been to either yet this season.

If you're planning on first turns for Saturday and Sunday stay away from Snowbird, they're opening up at 8am for pass holders only. We're gonna have a full hour to track up the place!

Good to know. Thanks.

No other info on how Snowbasin is doing? Really would like to take the guys there on Saturday but don't wanna miss a good day in LCC/BCC if Snowbasin just doesn't have the base yet.

Obviously I'd watch the dailly snowfall as well.

I don't think any of the local crew has been up there yet, so we get to go by their web report just like you!

Snowbasin seems like they have their major terrain open:
87 out of 104 trails open. 7 out of 9 lifts open.

Yeah I saw that they had most of the lifts open which to me meant most terrain, just wasn't sure how much was skiable. I was somewhat surprised they had Strawberry open already.

Strawberry is mostly gentle meadow, and doesn't require a lot of snow.

True but its pretty low and in my experience going up around Christmas it hadn't been open except on big snow year.

Was that before the Olympics? There is snowmaking on the two major trails and the return connector. I've found that they usually manage to open that terrain by Christmas.

The top of the Strawberry Gondola is higher than any of the other Snowbasin lifts except for the Mt. Allen Tram and it's base is 300' higher than the main resort base. It's no lower than anything else, but it does have more of a southern exposure, which has a major impact on the snow over there.

I was at Snowbasin on 12/27. They had just opened Strawberry for the first time and it was pretty low tide. Groomers were in good shape and they were still blowing snow. We were able to get the first rope drop of the day (of the season?) on the upper DeMoisy gate that wraps around the mountain. That traverse was super bony, but I'm on a board, so I struggle with traverses like that. However, the resulting run on Arrowhead was fantastic. Hit one rock in there at high speed, but snow was really good. Also, almost nothing off John Paul was open, but with this latest storm, I bet there's enough for it to be open. Same thing goes for the area under Sisters off Strawberry, bet it will be good with this new snow. I think Snowbasin will be worth a visit for sure.

I was at Solitude on 12/26. Back then, the West-facing side of Honeycomb was pretty bare. They had the gate at the top of Powderhorn open into Honeycomb, but we boot-packed back out once we saw how sparse it was. The East-facing (far) side was great. Again, being a boarder, I can usually only traverse out to Voltaire, but I had a completely fresh line to myself, and coverage wasn't an issue. In general, the Powderhorn terrain was the sketchiest non-Honeycomb terrain, but there were plenty of lines.

Overall, I bet you can't go wrong with any place during this storm. It seems to be a doozy. I'll be hitting the Bird tomorrow, probably, after I drive up from Vegas tonight. Hope the crowds aren't too bad, and hope the canyon's open.

Awesome info, thanks a lot. I'm expecting a total shit show in LCC tomorrow morning and a nice relaxing afternoon when the locals go to work.

I got the idea it would be slow in the afternoon from your previous comments in TRs.

Just got some pictures texted from a friend skiing Deer Valley , looked really good.

FYI apparently LCC will be closed tomorrow morning at 645A to reopen at 830A. Which, in my small experience, means 930A.

Estimated opening 8am. I'd expect it to be pretty much on time.

I've got company in town and already told my manager not to expect me in tomorrow. We took advantage of the good pass holder rates for the weekend and booked a room at the cliff lodge for Saturday night. I figure this is the perfect scenario, possibility of a canyon closure with a hope of an early pass holder opening. Even so, hanging in the hot tub at the Cliff while it nukes won't be all bad.
