Today was a sleeper: Mt Bachelor 3/31

After weeks of unusually fine March powder, our luck had to run out. So we got this warm front which pushed the snow levels up to around "Pass Level". Around here that's not very high (4500'+),but some of the other reports called for rain at the ski area base. Yesterday it was way windy with driving rain and huge puddles in town but reputable sources said it snowed all day Friday and the surface conditions were dense but quite fun. Especially up high.

So being Saturday I thought what the heck, I'll give it a go. I can always head down early and clean the refrigerator or whatever else I was going to do. The report said 1" new overnight but it snowed 10" yesterday, with about 2' the last few days so there has to be some fun patches somewhere…

The rain turned to snow halfway up the road but it was absolutely puking by the time I pulled into West Village. I was on the lift at 9am and there was nobody around, even though it's Spring Break and a Saturday! Today's forecast called for plummeting temperatures during the day with increasing snowfall intensity leading to another foot overnight into Sunday. I went straight to NWX. Should I have waited until later in the day today?

Answer: NOPE

After the long traverse out to the West Bowls (luckily I'm a goofy foot so I'm toeside) you get to pick your shot down to the West Catchline. Perfect right side up freshies with serious wind lips and natural ramps. I got stuck in a head-high drift so that's why I took these pics. PS: We're way over normal YTD with 454" so far and 163"/190" snowpacks at WV and mid-mountain. Sweet.

More of a moody scene shot, I turned around and squeezed this one off. I was still stuck and hadn't crawled over the lip yet. Quite a nice line was hidden below the bunker.

I'll be there next Friday-Sunday!

.LONG TERM...TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY...A COLD FRONT LOOKS TO
MOVE ACROSS THE REGION TUESDAY NIGHT. WILL THEREFORE SHOW HIGHER
POPS OVER THE WESTERN ZONES IN THE EVENING AND THE EASTERN ZONES
AFTER MIDNIGHT. FOR THE PERIOD WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, THE REGION
WILL BE UNDER A COLD UPPER LEVEL TROUGH. THIS TROUGH WILL CAUSE
ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS OVER THE AREA, MAINLY AFTERNOONS AND
EARLY EVENINGS. ALSO TEMPS WILL BE BELOW SEASONAL AND SNOW LEVELS
WILL BE LOW, PARTICULARLY IN THE MORNING. ANOTHER COLD FRONT MAY
REACH THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST EITHER FRIDAY NIGHT OR SATURDAY. WILL
KEEP THE CURRENT SLIGHT CHANCE TO CHANCE POPS GOING FOR FRIDAY NIGHT
AND SATURDAY DUE TO THE CURRENT TIMING UNCERTAINTIES

Whoosh!
