Tuckerman Ravine, NH: 04/30/06

Sometime approximately during the halfway point of my third run down F.I.S. at Sugarbush yesterday, I recalled that due to the injury and other variables, Saturday was my first day of the season pumping out big bumps on a steep slope. Also at about the same time, I realized I needed to save some leg for Tuckerman on Sunday. But I am never one to save up potential energy for potential good skiing when I already AM experiencing good skiing. So three more F.I.S. runs later...

So I got the days backwards this weekend. I figured Sunday would be warmer and less freezing over night so I thought it would be the better day for Tuckerman despite tiring my legs out on Saturday at da' Bush. Turns out it was too hot today so I should have reversed plans. Oh well.

The parking lot was more slamming than the previous week's Inferno Race, likely due to perfect weather this week and less than acceptable snow conditions last week. I tossed the skins in my bag based on a T4T report indicating traction on the upper third of the TRT would have been helpful. Glad I did, as my fair weather hiking sneakers did not like hiking up the snow. Switched over to skins about 100 verts above the second bridge and only needed to take off the skis once, woo!!! Better traction and less weight for around a quarter of the hike to HoJo's is cool by me. Next weekend I suspect I would not bring them.

HoJo's was freaking jumping with people. I immediately reconsidered plans for Right or Left Gully and looked towards Hillmans where I only saw three people climbing. People make me nurvous, especially in large numbers. It would be nice not to down climb to the Sherbie also, that is usually the final factor that sways my decision towards Hillman's.

The Boot Ladder was freaking perfect! Best boot ladder I have climbed to date, really well set and switch backed slightly on some of the steeper sections so it was well made and well executed. Another snowboarder I chatted with also thought the boot ladder was top notch. I bonked as per usual at the Right/Left split, I can't seem to lick that last 200-300 verts of the climb. 1000 verts on a climb seems to do me in, and it is seriously starting to annoy me. Funny part was my legs felt fine, I just had no wind left even after a short rest. My lungs are screwed up for someone my age, always have been.

Turns were sah-weet!!! Just past perfect corn as it was starting to get a little mushy in places. Lower down in the gully, some bumps were starting to form up. The entrance to the gully had really nicely spaced and consistant bumps, but the gully is getting tight and chocked with trees down low. The brook at the bottom of the gully is likely to open up sometime this week requiring a water crossing soon. Still tons of snow up there! Two dudes dropped dodges when I first got to the base of Hillman's. Looked sweet but not much room for error (okay, when is there room for error on dodge's?).

Sherbie was a legit 1/3!!! The Avi Report over stated the walking and going fast bit. I had to take off my skis twice for two short walks and walked my skis over some grass twice, but other than that it was nice snow, decent coverage but thinning out, and a legit 1/3. Sweet! Probably won't last till next weekend though.

It was just WAY too hot today to be comfortable. I try to take into consideration elevation changes in temperature, but sometimes it just doesn't effect the temps all that much.

You want pics? Too bad, you get video instead. Please Right Click and Save As to your computer to prevent multiple downloading and save me some bandwidth, thanks!

riverc0il strikes again! Get a look at the snowfields above tucks? Are they holding in there... Thinking of trying to summit next weekend.

PS we need to get this man a helmet cam!

i don't think i got a pic, but the east side of the summit cone still looks very white!!! you will have to use your imagination, but a summit bid would probably still be kosher next weekend, though you prob won't be able to ski all of it.

i would LOVE a helmet cam. they are expensive though and i am not sure if my cam would take a helmet cam extension, i will have to check into that. most helmet cam footage i have seen really sucks, to be frank. i wouldn't want to sink more money into a helmet cam than i did into the actual camcorder just to get crappy video. though i think this often has to do with people looking at the tips of their skis while skiing instead of down the fall line and/or not adjusting the cam correctly for that tendency.

what i need is some partners that want to shoot some video ;) solo efforts are hard to put together, especially in tux where either i was in a good spot but the skier not or the skier was in a good spot and i was not. this video effort isn't very good to be quite frank and the editting was sub par but i figured it would still be fun.

Do the east snowfields(of the auto road, then cut across to right gully. Follow the route in my awsome home made map.

Great TR, Riv! Glad to see you're still making up for lost time. WOrk has me in the weekends the next month, but I'm good for a few more trips. Maybe we can hookup with my friend Otto for a venture into new territory!

Great TR, Steve.

I opted for the Bowl, looking for Way2Ski, only to learn later that he opted to ascend via Hillmans, like you. He ended up skiing the Duchess! Hopefully he'll post a picture or two.

I'll limit my contribution to a few shots of the summit snowfields. I ascended via Right Gully. I skied right off the summit rock, then down the East Snowfields (after a little sidestepping over rocks and cog tracks), then traversed with full snow coverage back to the Lip.

Ready, willing, and able. Just give the nod.

word! always glad to get some turns in with ya sled! only wish our work schedules were more compatible. we had... what, three days this year? always good times. problem is when the times are too good, shooting video is the last thing on the brain. :D noticed you were heading up later this week, hope you make some great turns, plenty of snow left.

Ah Riv! My "Brothah from anothah Mothah!"

Yes, three days this year, however, that might be our record. Also, certainly a record for the days in a season that we skied together and I didn't have a pack and cross hairs on my parka, if you know what I mean,

THe season's not over and there is, god willing, next season. Hey, it wasn't the best season, but I've sure had some damn good days so far!

ya know, every season keeps getting better than the last the more i explore new england and all its possibilities, more possibilities than i could likely discover in a life time. the longer i participate in the sport, the more i believe a great season has less to do with the amount of snow that falls than what we make of it. and sometimes, less snowfall makes you make more out of something than you would have with average snowfall. from my experiences, this season has been nothing but spectacular.

That's the ticket. That's exactly how I feel. It's not always easy, but you have to go for it and make it the best it can be regardless of the conditions.

It takes commitment and hard work!!! :D

You know, I look back on the season so far and compare it to last year. Yes. More quantity last year, definitely more quality this year. It does have much more to do with your motivation to find and enjoy the goods. I can say I had more fun this season, even with the sub-par snow levels.

Every year is a bit better than the last...had more quantity this season than last which is good. Not as many powder days by far than last year, but alot of nice sunny days which is good. The days I skiied in the rain were not too bad, most of the heavy rain took place before or after skiing. That's good too. It's all good!

The only thing about this season I regret is that I never made it out west; I've gotta rectify this next season. My wife and I were discussing that last night...she told me it was OK if I decided to make a solo run up to Tucks again this weekend to compensate. But that would be a crazy drive up Friday night/hike and ski Saturday/drive home Saturday night marathon.

Tempting, but I think I'm gonna bank the goodwill for future use.

You're making me feel bad Jim. I had the same discussion last night with my wife, but i'm planning to do.

Not sure how long your drive to the MWV is, but it's 7 hours each way for me.

If I had a driving partner, or if I could stay over Saturday night and go home Sunday, I'd be packing my gear. But neither of those options is workable.

Enjoy!

this weekend definitely doesn't look like a top 10 on the weather front jim, so your decision to bank the good will may be sound. i am leaning towards just making a quickie up to jay instead of committing to a full day in the ravine with possible rain in the forecast. still too early to call though.

We are 3 Canadians also looking at the weather for this weekend, the plan would be Tucks on Saturday and Bretton on Sunday.

You already know about BW...

Yesterday and today look like gems regarding Mt. Washington.

The forecast is not so good for tomorrow and Sunday. Then again, forecasts up there can change in 10 minutes.

You guys still heading up(down)? You've gotta be in it to win it! Can't tell you how many times I've camped at the shelters and saw nothing but the inside of the lean-to for a day or 2, then was rewarded with a bluebird day.

From this morning's avy report:

As they slide through the area rain showers will develop from the SE towards the NE later for lower elevations. Rain in the higher mountains is expected to turn to snow showers so expect hard surface conditions to challenge razor edges in steeper terrain. We will have more clarification in tomorrow's Advisory about precipitation and falling temperatures for the weekend. Keep checking back if you're planning on coming this way because quick moving systems are changing forecasts rapidly.

We just made a decision based on many factors to wait 24 hours and hope Sunday is better.

Sunday will be slightly cooler, but more sunny and 0% chances of rain. I generally don't mind hard surfaces, but at Tuckerman, it's a whole different matter.

Oh yeah, we know about how quick it can turn. I remember the first and only time I've been in the Shelter back on Victoria Day weekend (3rd weekend in May) and it rained all evening and snowed 6 inches overnight. The skiing and hiking was impossible the next day. I managed 2 runs in the Bowl, but that's was it.
