US Ski team Trains at Mt Bachelor

Today was the third day the US Nordic Ski Team has been training on the long-closed trails directly adjacent to the West Village area of Mt Bachelor. Somehow the owners were convinced to provide grooming (paid for by the Team and XC Oregon) so the kids could get in some rare June nordic skiing. The US Forest Service said yes also, so it was a go. Needless to say the snow conditions were supurb.
I came out to do a long, slow distance ski to break up my training for an upcoming Olympic distance triathlon next month. It was difficult to ignore the change in the physiology of the current nordic racers: once long and lean, they're now built like college-level linebackers. It has become a real power sport; that's no certainly no issue with me, as I've never been accused of being either tall or skinny.
Local ski hero Justin Wadsworth is now one of the head coaches of the US Nordic Squad. No doubt he orchestrated bringing the team to Bend. He is married to Becky Scott, the recent Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist, who was seen today getting in some ski time.
Thanks to my coach, JD Downing of the stellar XC Oregon organization, for keeping me in the loop. It cost ten dollars to come out and ski and watch some great athletes.

One of the issues for late season skiing is how much terrain can you get at from how many lifts. Mt. Bachelor is ideally suited in this respect because of the vast area accessible from the Summit cone. You just need that lift plus either Sunrise or Pine Marten for access, and you have nearly 2,000 acres, 3,100 vertical and a legitimate FIS downhill for potential race training.

But Powdr Corp wouldn't want to be bothered with any of that.

That pictures are incredible! As a March/April skier I'd say that your pictures look better than most of my pow days adn the coverage looks fantastic.

As said before, I guess money counts somewhere.....
