Utah Ticket Deals, tirolpeter's move

Hey Tony, you mentioned "Season Passes." What are some of the "deals" that I might be eligible for if I live in the Salt Lake area? Is there such a thing as a "UT Resident (and/or Sr.) Discount Program" similar to what VT does? It doesn't hurt to plan ahead.

Can't wait to start dividing my Lift Ticket/Pass cost by the number of days/runs I'm going to be making. That's the kind of math I love! Might even buy one of those gizmos that records cumulative "vertical" and start computing my $/ft. I know, it sounds silly, but Summer Heat tends to make me a little crazy. Think Snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I'm not aware of any locals deals that are anything wonderful other than I think possibly something at The Canyons. Most individual resorts are +/- $1000 and the AltaBird pass is something like $1300.

For a mere $700 more than the AltaBird pass, though, you can get up to 30 days at each Utah ski area:

http://www.skiutah.com/specials/skipasses/

That one's non-transferable. For $2800 you can get 40 days at each resort with the Gold Pass that's fully transferable.

The Alta/Bird combined pass is $1250 ($1400 if purchased after 9/13). Most other SLC local resorts are around $800 +/- $100 - a little less than Marc's kilobuck estimate. Some areas offer senior citizen discounts. Alta's kicks in at 65 and is $499 (and free if you're over 80).
Alta also drops their season pass rate if you buy it after late January. Some other local deals include:

Discounted tickets for all resorts are available at most of the ski shops in SLC (not Park City). Discounts range from $4 for Alta to around $18 for The Canyons.

Alta Silver Card: this transferable $99 card gives you a once / day $20 discount off of the window price. Only for UT residents and requires a UT driver's license (or photo ID) to purchase and at each use.

Deer Valley: a 10-pack locals only book of tickets. Non-transferable but quite the savings on the regular $74 ticket.

The Canyons: Cherry Picker Pass, sold in blocks of 5 days at around $32/day.

Solitude: one of the more innovative season pass ideas - their site explains it best: Build your own pass with only the days you ski most by picking one weekday (Monday-Thursday), and ski that day all season long for just $249. Add additional days and save even more! Add additional weekdays (Monday-Thursday) for just $69 each. Add every Friday for just $99. You can even ski weekends. Add every Saturday for $359 or every Sunday for $179. It will still work out to $1K for a full pass. They also have ticket packs: Pick up an 11 Pak + Card and get 11 or more days for just $33 a day. Or grab a 6 Pak + Card and get 6-10 days for only $36 a day. Purchase the days you want and bypass the ticket window with direct-to-lift service. Also, add more days during the season at the pre-season price.

Snowbird: a variety of ticket packs, with or without the Tram. They also have a "Seven Summits" premium pass, which gives you full line-cutting privileges, including the Tram. It costs a mere $7500 in addition to your season pass.

Snowbasin has some kind of discount card similar to Alta's and PCMR has it's assortment as well. It's best to just go to the web site of each resort you're interested in and see what the deals are.

Any rates I quoted above are generally pre-season and will increase at some point. I'll be doing what I usually do - get an AltaBird pass, add in an Alta Silver Card for guest use (they usually find ways to reimburse me!) and maybe add in a Solitude 6-pack. I've been here 5 seasons and have yet to ski PCMR, let alone the out-of-state but reasonable drive resorts of Jackson, Targhee, Big Sky or the Colorado areas.

Maybe the "Good Book" is right? "Ask and you shall receive." That was a great response to my "Local Deals question." I am going to print it out in case my laptop crashes before I can process and use the information! Thanks!

Yeah, Marc_C is much more in touch with that stuff than I am. I should have a better handle on things this winter, as I'll be working more closely with Ski Utah this year (outside of FTO).

I really appreciate the time and effort you guys put in to responding to people like me. I'm kind of down about the way the house selling market is going at the moment and dispair a bit about the my plans to move west working out this coming season. I will get out there to ski for a few days, but don't know about being able to make the move. Who knows? Maybe the right buyer will come along tomorrow. In any case, thanks again. On a lighter note; when do I stop being a "novice?"

It's why this place exists. Marc_C's a pretty helpful guy, except when it comes to buying season passes for a friend's kid.

It's only August. I didn't get here until late January my first season. A lot can happen between now and then, and that made for a very interesting season, too -- start in New England, finish in Utah.

It's funny how that happens. My house in FL was on the market for 6 months when suddenly the right person came along and things happened very quickly.

50 posts. A black diamond's at 100.

I?m moving to SLC late November and planned on purchasing the Alta/Bird combo pass this week. Since both areas offer it, is there any benefit from buying it from either Alta or Snowbird?

There is hope for me yet this season. I have accepted an offer for my house and there were supposed to be sales contracts signed this past week. It seems that the buyer's attorney was leaving the law firm they were using and he didn't tell anyone, so that the contracts simply sat on someone's desk #-o . Now it is supposed to happen this coming Tuesday or Wed. [-o<
