Vacation Day 1: Alta 1/24/09

It puked various forms of frozen precip all day long. Somewhat warm temps, 32 at the base and near 28 at the top of the lifts. Non-stop dumpage, blowing sideways and stinging like pins and needles on exposed skn. Visibility was challenging, especially on the High T and in wide open bowls. You couldn't always see what the snow was doing beneath your skis. The snow was thick and required a bit more effort, but was still lots of fun. It ranged from creamy to cement as you lost elevation. The best run was through Eagles Nest. In fact we skied that run 3 times. Once in the morning and twice in the late afternoon. The 2 afternoon runs were quite different. The first of which, the snow seemed lighter and more skiable than our first trip through there that morning. We sensed the snow turning more flakey and the air temps colder. But by the very next run, the snow had turned back to graupel and it got a bit denser and more challenging. That was the run that did us in. But it was 3pm by that time, so it was a really nice full day of charging through the thick snow.

No photos today...too much snow. It was a real Gore-tex day. All outer surfaces were drenched. Thanks to high tech gear, the insides remained dry.

Players were Pam, Amy, Bobby D, Tele-Jon, Pat, Tirolpeter and Marc_C. We also ran into Salida in the lift line who w as on a huge fat ski, fattter than anything else we saw out there today, and we saw a lot of really fat skis. My Salomon Guns with 120 shovels looks like skinny skis in comparison.

I went to the ski shop up at Albion with Amy after skiing where she got her thermofit liners molded. Oogled the skis on the rack and am now contemplating a day of demoing the K2 Coombas and the new Phat Luvs. May do that on a weekday, but could end up resulting in a purchase that I cannot afford, or just thoughts of my next pair of skis, to be purchased at another time. I would like to see what those super phat skis are like.

So far, a great start to the vacation. The weather forecast looks pretty decent for the next few days.

Hope your travels were hassle free.

Looks like the colder weather is coming and things will just get better.

Looked at a few of the Alta webcams and you couldn't see Jack Schmidt, so I knew pukage was in progress.

Good luck resisting those fatties when you've got a seven day forecast like that.
