So I rode Vail today. It was pretty good, but sorry no pictures. We arrived at around 9:30 to the news that blue sky basin would open in half an hour. So an hour later when we finally got there there was still plenty of untracked goodness, but it was going fast. For some reason the staff felt the need to warn everyone about to get on the lift that this was "double black diamond terrain only" and that you should only go if you have super fat skiis. But it wasn't incredibly steep or gnarly, although theres lots of cool cliffs that could potentially sneak up on you if you had your eyes closed. The only sketchy aspect was that there wasn't really a base, just a couple feet of powder. Pretty consistantly knee-deep powder all around, on really fun terrain. Not much snow in the trees though. I did drop into the trees on the front side around wildwood and there was just enough cover to make it enjoyable, but there were plenty of hidden objects as well. Most of the trails either had some decent snow on the side or were groomed out nicely, but by the afternoon the surfaces of most trails weren't much fun anymore. But maybe that's just because this was my first real day out this season and my legs were killing me...
Overall they have a ton of terrain open, thanks to temperatures having stayed below freezing since last weekends storm dropped a few feet on Vail. What really made the day great was the opening of blue sky basin. I'd guess that they may have more untracked terrain that could be opened at any time, but I really have no idea. If you're thinking of heading to Vail this weekend, go.
