Vail Resorts

Tony, which of these is likely to be the best snow, most coverage, open pre Thanksgiving holiday?

Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone

Hmmm, I'd say Vail or maybe Keystone if it has to be a Vail Resort. If you just need it in the area I'd say Copper. But, I don't have the stats so I'm going off of gut feel.

Should be no surprise given Vail substantial snowfall edge over the other places mentioned. Winter Park's snowfall is similar, but for reasons not clear to me their percent of terrain open usually lags Vail. Keystone's terrain is on average quite flat: less cover required, so easier to open runs.

By mid-December Steamboat is usually best, and La Nina increases those odds this year. I'm guessing Steamboat is more dependent on destination than Front Range and perhaps not in as much of a hurry to get runs open in November.

As suggested above, Keystone and Vail lead. While Keystone might report a great %, Vail is so much larger that is an obvious leader by Thanksgiving.

Good point. Looking at acreage and what runs are open is important as well. I've seen Keystone open early but then still require downloading to the bottom via the gondola due to poor coverage on the lower bit of the mountain.

Thanks to everyone who replied with the information on the Colorado Resorts. I have 3 days there on a California Heavenly Valley season pass at any of those Colorado Vail Resorts (owned by the company Vail Resorts, that is!). The company is Vail Resorts that owns Heavenly Valley in CA.

Ironically enough, I spent my thanksgiving in lake tahoe and was asking the exact reverse as to what the issue is here. Heavenly rocked!

Anywho,
The past 5 years or so, Vail Ski Resort has had a huge early season. I've skied opening day and it was 2-3 feet of powder bliss.

Breckenridge Ski Resort, by Thanksgiving, also tends to be good. They just got 17 inches the other day so that should help ad a good base if it doesn't warm up to quick.

Keystone is hit or miss. Check the last minute weather reports for this one.

Winter Park & Mary Jane Resort seem to have their own climate system cause snow bearing clouds seem to stall right on top of the resort and unleash.

Steamboat Springs should also have good snow, but it's not as easy to get to.

Good luck!

Skicolorado, please avoid the temptation to spam the forums with tangential links to your websites. I've cast a more stern warning in another topic, where your post was less meaningful and even more of a spam attempt.

It sometimes is open before Heavenly, not always. They both Rock! More powder to the people who want it. I am in the Northeast, temporarily. Never met so many folks who hate snow in my life, except the last time I was in the Northeast! Not a lot of skiers in my world here.

CWHappyRN, I'm confused. I see two of your posts where you're just quoting someone but don't add anything? Am I missing something?
