You can see the old Wildcat chair and the old Germania chair before it reached Germania Pass:

Back when it required coordination and athletic talent to ski powder ...

A bit less competition though.

Germania chair is not that much below the pass. I'm guessing that's where it was my first time at Alta in 1981. The slight upward relocation probably came when Germania became a triple sometime in the 1990's.

It is a good quality video, considering the age. Tony's right - it did require more coordination to ski powder back then with the old, "skinny" skis. It's interesting to see how far back they were sitting on their skis, to keep the tips on those skis up in the air and not plunging down into the deep powder. My thighs were burning just watching them.

Wow what a great video..

It sure did take a lot to ski those skinnies in the deep pow. I can disticntly remember the first time I skied deep powder. Coming from only skiing on the east coast I went to Bogus Basin in ID because my buddies mom lived in Boise and he was going to visit. I tagged along so we could ski. We were 13

First day out...we go off on a side trail...knee deep...boy what a learning experience. So fun though.

You could not punch the smiles off those guys faces!
Great video of a great ski area.

This year, I am ditching the wife on her board in mineral basin and taking my first ever turns at Alta, I cant wait!

The Germ chair was realigned and extended to Germ Pass in 1986. Apparently that really pissed off some of the rabid hard-core because it "...made it too easy to get to the High Traverse...".

Nosing around youtube, I found this clip - an excellent example of a visitor not really knowing where he's going and
not knowing what's around certain corners at Alta...

Hey, that looks like my old Ski School jacket, except they wouldn't let us wear starry pants like that!
Check out those skinny skis, no wonder snowboarding caught on.
Sorry guys, nothing new to talk about. Maybe next weekend (starting rumor).

I bet the snow might have changed color a little behind him, a slight brownish tint. How high do you think that cliff was?

"High Sunspot" my ass. The spot in question that our intrepid touron found is the cable line en route to Gunsight. And mikesathome, it's nothing - depending upon snow depth it's maybe 12 feet or so. The biggest hassle of that sharp turn is that you don't want to go off the ledge if you're heading to Gunsight, as that's just more you'd have to climb back up. Instead, you want to take the hard right where the camera first points when he comes around that last bend, across the p-tex collector.
