Wasatch This Saturday :(

Somehow I think I might find something to do in the valley this Saturday, and Sunday doesn't look like roses and chocolates either....

The NWS sez:

Friday: A chance of snow before noon, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Some thunder is also possible. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. Light wind becoming west southwest between 13 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Friday Night: A chance of rain and snow. Snow level 9400 feet rising to 10000 feet after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 31. West southwest wind 15 to 18 mph becoming west 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Saturday: Rain and snow. Snow level 10200 feet lowering to 9200 feet in the afternoon . High near 45. South wind 9 to 11 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Saturday Night: Snow likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 28. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44.

Surprising to see those high snow levels in Utah. Snow level at Mammoth Friday night/Saturday is predicted 8,000 feet, with 1-2 feet new expected over 9,000.

this is just a guess as this forecast is similar to the one that dropped 18" for my visit. little cloud could be good saturday afternoon and the whole place above wilbers could be good sunday, especially for those that can get over to alta like admins group did last week.

No, it's not. It's May now. Anything's possible.

Does everything need to be compared with Mammoth? I had pizza for dinner last night, but it just doesn't compare with the pizza at Mammoth. Sheesh.

This one, though, is rather simple. The jet stream is pretty much zonal right now. By tomorrow morning the low is expected to be sitting right over the northwest corner of Utah. That puts the Wasatch in the warm, southwesterly flow, while northern California will be over the relatively cooler, northwesterly flow.

Actually it's quite different. That storm dropped down from the northwest and the low passed to our south, putting us on the cold side of the storm. This one is approaching from the due west and will pass overhead or slightly to our north.

I always thought Tony was talking about Wooly Mammoths....

what is this place you speak of...

P.S. you cant get good pizza anywhere west of the Mississippi... ;)

Settebello? Big Apple's pretty darned decent, too.

Settebello is in a class by itself but certainly isnt "pick up a pie and bring home" pizza...

Big Apple I am unimpressed...yes its "ok", but hardly what im used to.. ;)

You can get great pizza in San Francisco, but it costs $482.79: $17 for the pie, $85 for cab fare, and $378.80 for the flight to New York. Throw in $1.99 for tinfoil.

well, what i was referring to was the ever dropping snow line and the snowfall totals that were greater than what they 1st thought, and in general just peaking through my always rose colored glasses. i did not pay attention to the flow though, thanx marc.

have fun y'all, i sure wish i were still there. that tram dock patio was/is a truly nice place to have a frosty cold beverage after a day of ultra foofyness. you WILL see me there next year. gonna try for the month of april. 279.00 spring bird pass and all of the empty bc that anyone can handle.

again, sorry to all for my stupidness in the past. i feel horribly for the things that i've said.

back to work for me, ugh.

It's relevant because it's the same weather system. Snow levels usually don't rise as a storm moves from the Sierra to the Wasatch. Howard Scheckter has pushed his snow level prediction a bit higher today, but should still be all snow above 9,000, more consistent now with the Utah forecast. FWIW Mammoth is about 3 degrees of latitude south of LCC, about the same as Telluride.

The other comment about lifts stopping is also relevant because Mammoth's lifts run routinely in May/June and I don't recall the problem that Collins has, which admin attributed to high altitude and high temperatures.

I'll stay out of the pizza discussion.

Yeah Skidog, you were definitely being "generous"about Pizza and the Mississippi. After two years on the Wasatch Front, we have yet to find any pizza beyond "edible" in all the places we have tried. The sacrifices we have have had to make for great snow are amazing.

OK, screw pizza...but first...

Then you obviously haven't been to Settebello. As Skidog said, it's in a class by itself.

In 1984 a group of pizzaioli, led by Antonio Pace, sought to preserve the identity and integrity of Napoletana pizza. From this struggle with the Italian government was born the association Verace Pizza Napoletana or Vera Pizza Napoletana (VPN).

While forms of foccacia had been around for centuries, it was in Napoli where tomatoes were first placed on round discs of bread and cooked in brick wood fired ovens sometime in the late 1600's. Mozzarella also made its debut on pizza in Napoli in the mid 1800's if not earlier. While it is widely believed that the classic Napoli style pizza, the margherita, was invented by a pizzaiolo in 1889, there is written evidence that a pizza with tomatoes and mozzarella was already being made in Napoli much earlier.

It is this history that Signore Pace and others are trying to preserve through the VPN.

On May 16, 2007 Settebello Pizzeria was certified by the President of the US Chapter of the VPN, Peppe Miele, as only the 16th member in the United States. Settebello is the only certified member in the state of Utah. We will always strive to preserve the art of pizza making as it has been done in Napoli for over 200 years.

Now back on topic, for we've got important business to attend to here! It's just started precipitating at the mid-Collins snow plot, 0.07 of precip which I presume is of the frozen variety as it's 36ºF up there right now and dropping quickly, presumably from evaporational cooling as well as nightfall -- it went from 45ºF to 34ºF between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. I'm guessing that means about a half inch of snowfall since 6 p.m.

Alta_CollinsData_090501_2000.jpg

The forecast looks predominantly like snow, at least at 9,797 feet:

Alta_forecast_090501.png

However, note that it's already significantly cooler than the forecast plot predicted. \:D/ There won't be much, if any softening of bases going on tomorrow. But that's a moot point if we get enough snow overnight. The dew point is predicted to rise modestly overnight, approaching 30ºF which means elephant snot, but with the temperature already below forecast the dew point may ride low as well. In any event it is predicted to drop throughout the day tomorrow, which means that the snowfall will dry out as well.

Thoughts? Where's Craig's input when we truly need it?

And speaking of Craig, as long as I'm posting...

What in the hell has come over you, anyway? Castrated? A visit from the Ghost of Christmas Future? What?

Ugh! There's only a 1-degree separation of temperature and dew point atop Collins. :?

i haven't spoken to craig since i got back, but the general thoughts from him and the boyz that work up top in patrol at the bird were that there could/would be good powder skiing this weekend. i try to trust my gut on these things as well. i had a feeling that last weekend would provide some fantastic skiing and this weekend should too. not too deep, but just deep enough to give a good ride. i've been wrong b4, but who hasn't? just hoping.

what's come over me? well, just tired of being a know-it-all  a$$hole. i love to ski and be in the mountains and realize that i don't have to be an a-hole to do it. i long to ski and share beers with you guys next april.

Have you been struck in the head with a lead pipe?? Maybe you have come down with some disease(god forbid) and now you are trying to make peace with everyone??
