Waterville Valley, NH - April Fools 2007 - 3.5 cents per run

Sunday morning, I woke way too early after going to bed way too late. I was in Montreal and needed to pick up Lucky Luke at 6ish maybe one hour from Montreal on the Eastern Townships Autoroute (10).

Longest drive of my season. Waterville was charging $1 for a lift ticket and Lucky and I couldn't resist. Even if it was slightly more than 3 hour from Montreal (and over 5 hour at night to make it back to Ottawa). This was going to be a 3 CD trip. Music started with Johnny Cash: Unchained. The new Neil Young, live at Massey Hall in 1971 followed by Luc's Nevermind by Nirvana.

Our day worked out at roughtly 3.5 cents a run. :) 28 runs totally over 10,000 meters vertical (33,000 feet). Not many bumps (like at Tremblant), mainly cranking up some turns. We skiied non-stop from 10 to 4, to afraid to stop. We wondered if we could get our bodies back on the hill if we had stopped.

First time even at Waterville. Nice evenly pitch runs. The liftlines were pretty crowded and took about 15 minutes are the main quad (White Peak Express).

Lifts open: White Peak HSQ
Quazilla HSQ
Northside Double
Sunnyside Triple
plus two small t-bar/jbar at the bottom.

Luc and I have often hit ski area freebies in the past like May Mania at Sunday River or June 1st slalom at Kmart. Sometime that was sad to see is that the snow conditions and coverage was pretty similar at what we would have found at Sunday River on May 1st, 10-12 years ago.

Like the first run on the previous day, the North facing runs were pretty hard to get a good edge on them. We ended skiing pretty much interesting open run True Grit and Lower Bobby Run were I think the only not really groomed runs, however the bumps weren't great and pretty far apart from one another. We ended up skiing groomed soft stuff pretty much all day.

The worst part on the hill in term of coverage? The top part of the 3-4 Sunnyside Black diamond runs (Ciao, Gemma, True Grit, LBR) and the top with Sun Run and top of White Peak. No base, ice, rocks. Pretty marginal spot that will probably be gone before they last weekend, next week.

The blue Oblivion and especially the No Grit had a serious chocolate chip issues.

We eventually started going laps on Ciao where no one really want to tackle the very narrow straith line of snow on the top of the pitch entrance. Of course, prior to that, you had to tackle the poor coverage and traffic issues on Sun Run. The straight line of snow got longer and longer (maybe 30 feet). After that it was high speed turns on an empty run all the way down. We also alternated with Abandon, Tommy's WCR and Sel's Choice. All great fun. Althought the conditions and coverage was even close to Tremblant. I definitely had more fun skiing with Lucky at a new place with some pretty good runs.

Left the ski area at 4:50, the Nirvana Cd was finishing up. Move on to PJ Harvey Uh-Huh will driving past Cannon (not much snow on Cannon either). Crossed the border and arrived at Lucky's with Pearl Jam (Rear View Mirror). Left for Ottawa at 9 and arrived past midnight. I am dead....but happy. We found out that this April Fool $1 thing was a annual event, I guess we'll try to make it back, now that the yearly May 1st and June 1st ski events and freebies are virtual extinct. 8)

Oh well, the weather was very Spring like Sunshine. 8) 8) 8)

I need to go to bed earlier...

What can I say more? Great day, with a great buddy, nice soft snow, some twenty-something bare patches to jump over (lots of fun). Sorry, no time for pictures. :D

Dude, you're officially nuts. Three hours in each direction to ski Waterville? That said, I drive two hours each way to ski Belleayre, so I guess that's more or less the same.

One difference, Patrick had to pass a dozen prime time resorts to get to Waterville  .James we have to pass MC ...

I don't know if you guys have list of where you want to be at least one time in your life? We both (Lucky and Patrick) made a check on our list that day.

The only rationale for this trip IMHO. Factor in the car cost of the extra mileage, not to mention the fatigue, and I think you'll hit something in Northern Vermont or the Townships next time.

Actually that 3 hours is from Montreal, if you factor in Ottawa you need to count 5 hours. That was a loooong drive back home, but I made it before.

When you consider the conditions at Tremblant the previous day, why would I drive all the way down to Waterville? Seriously, I don't think I've had a day like the one at Waterville this year. Over 30,000 feet vertical - no stopping for lunch and skiing until the last chair up at 3:59pm.

Also a big factor, where else can you ski a 2000' vertical ski area (okay, the top was closed) for less than 4 cents a run? I skied more vertical than Tremblant for 40x less money (I had a 40% off at Tremblant). I'm I going to go back at Waterville? Probably next April Fools unless there is a better deal on a quality mountain elsewhere for the same day. Lucky Luke is probably going to come along again also.

There is also the factor that Saturday was my 100 times at Tremblant since 1981-82 (much higher in my lifetime) versus a new area. Waterville isn't in my top 10 in the East, however it offer some great groomers for those who like that type of stuff.

Lucky and I like everything, on Sunday we got a high speed groomer day. Waterville hosted a number of World Cup races in the past, meaning that the potential for a certain type of runs I like was very likely.

Now what else is on my to-ski list with over 2000' verts in the East? :-k

Mad River Glen on Saturday, that will only be 4.5 hours from Ottawa (on 2 1/2 from Mtl).
