another quick report from whistler...(no pics yet cause we forgot the digicam in TO)
peak chair opened to much hype on saturday - pronounced "the earliest peak chair opening ever". that was slightly untrue since last year it opened on the same date. i managed to make first chair up last year, but not this time. hundreds of folks were lined up as soon as they stepped off the gondola. busy weekend traffic from US and Van.
it was COLD, which meant uncharacteristic dry light powder - everywhere! the alpine is completely filled in. it has taken me a few days to feel confident enough to just let it all go. but avi reports suggest there is close to a 3m base above the treeline, so you will not bottom out in the bowls.
did a traverse around the backside of peak which has been scoured down to rock on hwy 86. that was the only crunch i heard all day. fresh soft snow all the way to the valley!
we were hit with that arctic storm the past few days - snowing at -10C. that is also very unusual for this area. supposed to get sunny this week and stay very cold until thursday. hoping to make a few hikes out to flute once the visibility gets better...
hate to admit it, but i still haven't been up blackomb. i dunno, i guess i'm just a whistler guy.

I think mark would agree now that it was worth sticking around Whistler after suffering through 2004-05 his first year.
