A repost of greg's TR.

Three weeks skiing in UT and bootlegging brewSKI out of WY deserves a TR. It also deserves a theme song:

Premise: Salida moves out to SLC and joined the ranks of an illustrious online gear store located there. Meanwhile Grizzly Adams has built several pairs of skis and needs to do "field testing". By pure coincidence at the same time K_C is in need of some deep powdah and wants to get out of VT for a little while. Furthermore, as if that weren't enough Soul_Skier moves to Alta, while a Vt'er for life, Altmanator, proves to be the f'ing MAN in SLC, Samthaman, Allentaylor and Backcountryben take a road trip to end all road trips, and I find myself in the middle of all of it... and by that, I mean SKIING.

Main Characters:

It all starts back in early December when my flight from Burlington was delayed, and I spend a night in Chicago enroute to SLC. Salida picks me up at 10am the next day, and I'm tired, stinky, my bags are lost, and I'm wearing my touring boots because I didn't want to check them. He lends me some gear and we head up to Alta for skiing of course.

Salida shows me his new LCC style

I was stoked to be in the sun and snow
smaller0072.jpg

The next day I met up with a friend of mine who patrols at the bird and didn't have time for any pics except one of superior which I took to get my mind off the frustrating experience of digging for my ski
smaller0011.jpg

Friday I get to meet all Salida's friends at his place of employment and we also got to sneak up to the Canyons. With some fast talking and quick feet we convince the lifties to let us up the flight sans proper credentials, and enjoy some decent pow off the beaten path. The part of the place that we skied reminds me of Flatton in Vt with maybe a bit more snow

Salida has always enjoyed the EC though

That night we obtain Grizzle Adams for the airport. Of all things i regret not having a picture of this trip, it's grizz getting off the airplane with a million things dangling from his La Meije, a masterpiece of facial hair, and a brightly colored pom pom hat.

The next morning there was an interlodge, so we got up early to beat it.

After the ban was lifted, Grizz got right to work and got deep

smaller0025.jpg

smaller0026.jpg

I think he was happy he made the journey, and beat the interlodge
smaller0027.jpg

Salida shows us a hidden stash
smaller0016.jpg

On the way out we knew the next day was gonna be good cause we saw this piece of buried treasure (AND it was still hammering)
smaller0074.jpg

For the next few days we skied with Altmanator and he shows us that he knows where the goods are... the days all blend together at this point, but it just kept snowing right on through Christmas, so who cares what the date was... they were all grey and deep

Altmanator spies his line
smaller0019.jpg

And down he goes
smaller0020.jpg

"Where does that chute go Altmanator?" I asked. "Goods" Altmanator replied.

Salida decided it was a good idea to follow this guy around

So did Grizzly

Tell me Grizzly doesn't look like Dick Durrance in this photo

Grizz and Salida (this one's for their parents)
smaller0035.jpg

Hell, I might even enjoy where this guy leads
smaller0054.jpg

Then one day at lunch we run into non other than Sage C-A at Alf's Restaurant. He seems like a cool guy, but he took a little bit too much of a liking to Grizzly's pickles after Grizz bought them for .75$ a pop. Although Sage is a pro skier, he got ZERO free pickles from Grizzly Adams. Those pickles are just too damn tasty! (sorry Sage!)

That afternoon Salida decided that something he'd been eyeing all season was ready for the green light, and he gave it the gas down this line with a near cliff of rocks and trees to the skier's left and a narrow hole in the wall to the skier's right
smaller0038.jpg

smaller0036.jpg

smaller0037.jpg

Grizzly things that was teh siht
smaller0039.jpg

Then on Christmas eve we made a run for the border, beer, and some family time for a few hours. WY stretches out from Independence Rock
smaller0042.jpg

Salida and I got a bit restless without any skiing, and decided to go out and do some "big drift hunting" in the desert to kill some time on Christmas day. That pretty much means finding the biggest drift in an otherwise snowless desert and making one or two turns.

Upon our return we learn that yet another baker's meter of snow has fallen and that they can't get backside to move (even with a several part multi charge)
smaller0045.jpg

The destructive force of nature elsewhere in LCC was obvious though
smaller0056.jpg

smaller00083.jpg

We played it safe and stuck between the ropes for a few days. It's amazing what you can find between the ropes though

smaller0052.jpg

Then finally Backside moved,
smaller0060.jpg

things settled down, (yeeha! the summer road is open!! that MUST mean the backcountry is safe... i mean... hey... there's, like, 40 tracks down flagstaff!)
smaller0073.jpg

and we were back in business... and by back in business, I mean we went to Snowbasin

Me thinking: "is this really only 8 inches?"
smaller0066.jpg

okay... maybe it is... right here at least
smaller0067.jpg

Grizzly says: "shenanigans! this is at least a foot and a half"
smaller0064.jpg

Grizz also says: "Glad everyone went home after one run down No-name... it really got tracked out... it wasn't even worth skiing."
smaller0065.jpg

Salida thinks he can get accustomed to this after the dogfights in LCC

Finally all good things must come to an end sometime, and so too must this trip. To finish it up I met samthaman, allentaylor and backcountry ben for a run down some sick hike-to trees and some epic deepness...

That night as I was packing up, Grizzly got word that we had an opportunity to meet a fellow Bucknell alum, and all around mountain legend, Walt McConnell, and chat with him for a few hours about his adventures. An amazing man, and a wonderful role model.

Then before I knew it I was on the plane, heading east, hiking stowe, causing 8 foot crowned avalanches

Watching jtran get DEEP
smaller0070.jpg

and into tight places
smaller0069.jpg

and meeting up with some familiar faces...
smaller0071.jpg

I think I can get used to this... Thanks for looking!

Great shots! Nice to see one of jtran at the end, too. Is he coming back this winter?

I knew this was coming....it definitely lived up to the high expectations I had regarding this TR.

In case you were wondering. I was mounting up the 4s's with more reliable binders.

Oh yeah, I remember those releasing a few time at Jay. Good to see the love you put into them.

I have great memories of my first pair of 4S's (I bought another pair two years after)... Back when I started skiing on them, they were like...WOW. Best ski I had ever knowned. Definitely a classic ski ... that is gathering dust in my basement.

I'm....ready? I'm sure the altitude will kick me around, especialy since I will have no time to aclimate before you guys trash me..but it will be a good trashing and the weather looks good, devoid of big dumps but good non the less.

WOW!!!!!

I must say those are some damn fine photos. You guys are some damn good skiers by the look of those shots! This just proves something I've known all along. East Coasters can slay the west like the best.

I hate how TGR forces males to behave and produce things like this.......

Yeah - It really is miserable to have fun skiing, photo document and share it with others. Just plain old horrible.
