Just catching up on reading some old The Economist magazines, I noticed a very interesting article on new experiments being done on how different types of snow are formed. The form of the flakes changes from hexagonal flowers to prisms as the temp drops, then chnages back as the temp drops further.... Interesting, and I guess that's what makes the difference between heavy (which I suppose is the prism-shaped flakes)and light snow. But rather surprising (to me at least), the relation isn't linear between temp and consistency of the snow. If anyone is interested, the article is "Fake Flakes" on p. 121 of The Economist, Dec. 23, 2006.
