Where To Go April 10-15

I'm planning a spring break ski trip with my son April 10-15, probably either Summit Co. Colorado, or LCC, Utah. Any suggestions / recommendations? Thanks

Colorado of course :snowball fight: .

Really I'd wait a couple more weeks. If Colo stays on and looks to stay on the snowfall pattern of late, Colo has much higher odds of good powder days and less mank than LCC :snowball fight:.

Of course I'm just guessing for you since I don't know your or son's abilities, etc... More info might help.

Well, then, it's not LCC that's under consideration, it's Snowbird

I don't think Snowbird by itself has enough groomed blues and blacks for a week. You'd have to add brighton/solitude or even Park City/Deer Valley/Canyons into the mix over in Utah (I assume most places are still open through that week?).

Colorado is generally tailor made for intermediate to advanced skiers. The major resorts in the central mtns are all open through Arpil 18th. Exact location to go depends on your budget, desires for a 'mtn town' environment, etc... Though prices are usually much more reasonable even in Vail or Breck by that week (vs the prime time gouging, er... pricing going on now through the first weekend of April).

Don't depend on it, particularly in a year with 70% of normal snowfall at the moment. PCMR projects an Apr 11 closing date. Here are the closing dates from 2007 for comparison. In that year, Apr 15 was the third Sunday in April (meaning many closed at the end of the second week of April):

* Alta Ski Area… April 15, then open April 20-22
* Beaver Mountain… Closed
* Brian Head Resort… April 15
* Brighton Resort… April 15
* The Canyons Resort… April 8
* Deer Valley Resort… April 15
* Park City Mountain Resort… April 15
* Powder Mountain… April 8
* Snowbasin… April 15
* Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort… tbd
* Solitude Mountain Resort… April 15
* Sundance Resort… Closed
* Wolf Mountain… Closed

With Easter being April 4 I would absolutely confirm any areas you're considering being open after April 11. There will be a LOT that close then given both economy and below average snow. If you're intermediates, EMSC is right: the Park City group (if open) will be total slop and Summit County CO would be preferred.

But Mt. Bachelor and Mammoth are still the best IMHO at that time of year. I know the air connections from the East are more difficult, but it's worth the extra effort IMHO.

But then you have to get to either Bend or Mammoth, which is no small feat! Plus, Mammoth has all those Californians boasting how they "shred the gnar" and the epic "pow pow" they hit! :stir:

Any one who says "pow pow" should be buried somewhere on the mountain, not to be let out until they renounce the use of the phrase. And I'm a lifelong SoCalian.

Ummm, that's not where I'd go that late!

I'd say we're both strong intermediates (he's a snowboarder- 18 years old)
So LLC and Park City Group are out. Either high chance of crap snow, archaic rules against snowboarders, weak beer or all three.

I strongly agree, but you're probably looking at Arapahoe or Loveland, not Breck or Vail at that time.

We're getting warmer. May I make a suggestion?

Redmond, OR. (RDM) has great connections to back east through Denver and SLC. It's just off most folks radar, so that's why they go elsewhere. March and April are our best months for snow. I think Mammoth would be my top choice this year, but it's so dang hard to get to. We're a very close second and have a fun town for afternoon and evenings.

schubwa,

Once my kids are all skiing/boarding, we're coming to Bend, I'll tell you what. Bachelor and Deschutes (and whateva else ya got to wash down the food).

Everybody's new local favorite: Ten Barrel Apocalypse IPA. I had two tonight to go with my Baldy's BBQ pig-out rib dinner.

Had a Deschutes Inversion IPA last night..and yes, in Utah -- the land of "weak beer." Good stuff.
