Whistler 12/30/09

Today was a day of the good/bad/and the ugly.
Good:
Whistler bowl had nice snow. The trees underneath had chalking dry powdery snow. Snow moved in by around 1:00 and it looks like a very promising weekend. Watched the fiance' ski beautiful parallel turns on some headwalls fearlessly.
Bad:
I had a nasty fall on a flat green in the middle of a cloud bank. I hit a bump that I didn't see nor anticipated and landed on my inside edge. That precipitated in a caught edge and long slide face first. I didn't get hurt though... but the Iphone didn't handle the fall as well as I! #-o Now I can only speak using speaker or head-phones!
Ugly:
The fiancé's legs were tired to start off the day, and her boots were worse than uncomfortable. I received a text saying, right before lunch, that her legs were shot and that her boots were so uncomfortable that she would have a hard time enjoying the rest of the day. I decided it would be best to keep her happy and we would ski from the roundhouse to the base and call it a day. We got about half way down before she hit the wall. We had to actually hit a lift back up to roundhouse to download on the gondola. Being the supportive guy I am, I took her over to Surefoot to have them diagnose why her boots were so off. They look at her feet, and said "the shell is great, the liner $#@T." I ended up dropping a major amount of money to get my bunion laden lady custom liners and footbeds. The only positive was that I had a hotspot pinched out on my boots while there.
Uglier:
Tomorrow, and the day afterwards are guaranteed powder days. The lady doesn't want ski school anymore, and my extended family at who's house we're staying aren't about getting up early to hit the mountain (they also hate powder  ). I might very well have to watch the mountains get skied out from the mountain itself! ](*,)

Surely you have explained the priority (and rarity for someone living in NYC) of powder days to your fiance by now.

Presumably she's somewhat committed to skiing by going for the custom footbeds. Which I've often said were my best lifetime investment in ski equipment. And hopefully you scored some points buying them, which you ought to cash in the next 2 mornings.

Go to the ski school lineup first thing in the morning, ask her to pick out the best-looking guy there, and negotiate an all-day "lesson" (escort). She's happy; you're happy. Tell him to take her to the swankiest restaurant in the resort for lunch. If you're serious about getting married, you'll have to start thinking outside the box.

For our (anti-jinx) storm this weekend, I had to reiterate the "no family on powder days" clause to my wife last night.

She is fine with me going on her own, and I've put her in ski-school the last two days...but she put her foot down and said no at least for today! It's my family that is lazy doesn't want to go early to the mountain. I made a mistake as I should have rented my own car. I also told her "I don't have a fiance on a powder day."

I think she felt guilty when she saw the cost, but she does enjoy skiing, although she isn't comfortable outside of steeper greens. Anyhow, she gave me permission to leave her in the dust at least for tomorrow, which should be the big powder day. The bigger problem is how I'm going to coax the family get me to the mountain by 8:30.

My condolences, I unfortunately had some rare similar occasions in the past and it didn't even involve family. I know the feeling. ](*,)

No buses or taxis? hitch hike? Heli?
It's a powder day man, must use all available options!!!
Good luck

It's Whistler man. Mike is right, unless you're staying in Pemberton or Squamish, there is a way to get to the lifts. Bus, cab or walk. :ski:

If she becomes a committed skier, they will last nearly forever and in retrospect be considered a great bargain.

Agree with Mike and Patrick, should be a bus somewhere close. And worth a cab on the right day if there isn't.

After today she was the most enthuastic skier of the whole group. Needless to say I am very happy! She did some steeper blues, but that is another topic waiting to be posted.
