Whistler Openning Day 11/20

Nice video. What is the device he holds out in front instead of a ski pole to film himself in action?

There were some high alpine shots in there. So I assume those were earned turns as the website doesn't mention Peak or Harmony lifts being open yet.

Any camera with a bicycle handlebar mount can have that placed on a ski pole.

I agree with Tony - that's definitely something other than a ski pole (esp. since you see his second pole upright in his pack). The bigger question is what is he using as a camera - 'cause it has insanely good image stabilization.

Looks like an extendable pole very similar in size to a ski pole. Looks a touch longer than a ski pole, but might as well be a ski pole. I've attached my helmet cam to my ski pole in the past and get essentially the same angle and view as that vid (of course it wasn't a powder day when I experimented so much with the cam so no one watched the vid :lol: )

I expect that the hand held camera mount could be the XShot 2.0 Monopod Camera Extender...

Which looks ostensibly like a telescoping ski pole with a clamp on the end.
As for the camera, one could guess based on the profile of his helmet mount that its an HD model by GoPro. The best way to insure image stabilization is a secure mount. Goggle mounts just don't cut it - too much vibration. I have an Drift X170 (SD) and the velcro helmet mount is good if your helmet is stable whereas the handlebar mount that I use on my old sled is rock solid.

The GoPro is that good at IS? There seems to be more going on in that vid than just IS - it looks like steadicam shots. It's really hard to hold a camera and get those rock-solid shots, esp. when it's at the end of a 3' pole.

For the life of me I cannot understand the pricing on that one, which is basically a rig for holding weights at various locations to alter the center of mass of the camera (unlike the profession Hollywood models with gyroscopes, servo controlled gimbals, and remote LCD screens). Yeah, it's sleek and all, but $800?????!! =;

Here's a DIY steadicam - the basic version without the homemade gimbal is $14!
