Whistler T-Day

Was not optimistic last night.

Was not optistic this morning looking up at the mountains, shorn of their winter white coat by the rain yesterday.

Was not optimistic after the first run down Jersey Cream. 12 cm of new snow had fallen down to the Glacier Creek Lodge but it was thick and lumpy. And the Jersey Cream groomers were Vermont noisy.

But then 7th Heaven opened. Busted over and had no line on the first lap. Bright sunshine, white trees, and fresh snow that while far from fluff was much more fun than the lower altitude schmoo.

Second lap there was a line - not a surprise given the delta between 7th and Jersey - so skied off the back and hit a Cougar Chute with even better snow than 7th owing to its more favorable exposure.

Coulior Extreme was the next lap. Amazingly easy to get into, not the usual mogul/ rock/ person standing on snow between mogul and rock slalom course. Snow was soft at the top, scratchier at the choke, and then fine lower down.

Rode up the lift with someone who was coming back from Spanky's - was not even on my radar that this would open but if I had known I would have headed there instead. Don't have the "home field" advantage here that we enjoy in LCC.

Skipped lunch and hit Emerald (sketchy getting in high, better getting in low). The road out to Excelerator was icy and rutted/ not fun. Next lap was Blackcomb Glacier. Nice lightly tracked drier snow (again a more favorable altitude and aspect). Last lap was a Ruby Bowl.

There were three Whistler employees standing by the rope at the top of Excalibur to make sure that nobody would jump the rope and attempt to ski back to the village. They probably weren't needed. The ski out looked unwelcoming.

Here for two more days. Hoping for the Peak Chair tomorrow.

My new years trip to Vail has been replaced by new years trip to Whistler. It's all expenses paid, so that was the deciding factor, along with the large amount of snow that has already dropped at Whistler. I will be flying out on the 28th/27th of Dec, and flying back the 3rd or 4th. Should be fun.

Awesome post Skrad, I am envious you lucky bastard. I read a report (11/25) of recent rain on http://whistlerblackcombsnowreport.com/ do you now how high it went? The listed base has dropped about 30cm - so I'm wondering if it is a settlement issue or a rain shrink issue.
The 11/26 report echos what you are saying about today. Glad to see you're getting the goods. I have to wait until Christmas to get mine in the interior (12/25 - 1/4)

Snow-forecast.com would indicate that the snow hose is shuting down for the next few days. The 6 day is a meager 17cm. I have been monitoring the 6 day forecast for W/B and a half dozen interior areas since Sno-vember 1st, today's f/c is the first where Revy and the Horse are predicted to get more than W/B. However, the Environment Canada forecast would indicate 40-65cm are possible by Tuesday. You lucky bastard!

I don't really trust the Brit wags that run Snow-forecast, but I do know that Environment Canada doesn't lie...

Watch out for those Snowboarders dude! :-s there is a whack of 'em in the W/B - One could argue that W/B is the N.A. snowboard mecca, it definately is for Canada.

I'm not worried if the rain went all the way to the Alpine. I have a month and half before I go, so I'm pretty confident there will be some snow days ahead. As long as it doesn't rain the day before I arrive or while I'm there I will be happy. The most important thing is that there is a base, so I won't have to download. Last year I had a trip to whistler planned, and a month before I was to go I was sidelined by a surgery. Now, hopefully, we won't have that problem.

Glad to be here, thank you.

Rain did do damage but the forecast is up to a half meter in the Alpine by Tuesday. That should resurface the terrain that matters.

By the way, I have been enjoying this new site: whistlerblackcombsnowreport.com that I found on "Your Guide to Snowfall". It has pictures and and video clip from yesterday.

Get out and after it.

I was actually thinking of getting there next week if I could make it happen point-wise + home/work front, however I just remembered, I still need to rebuild my ski equipment. DAMN BUENOS AIRES TAXI DRIVER!!!!

Anyway, I know my friend SuperNat was suppose to do a clinic next week at Tremblant and has the week off, but Tremblant is close so she might go to Whistler. She already has taken the days off, so...just need to get on a plane.
