This season has not been too kind to Whiteface. They have enough trouble getting enough snow on the tallest ski area in NY. El Nino's thaws and freezes with a dearth of snow haven't helped.
The cold temperatures of weeks past enabled them to make a lot of snow. The snowguns were on this weekend as well, covering up the ice and rock below. There was no base to speak off the snomaking areas. The best snow was on the trails with the snowguns in action.
Our first run we went right to the Summit Quad and up to the Whiteface Summit. Cloudspin and Skyward were in pretty good shape. They had good coverage and were carveable. There was a variety of conditions all the way down, from fresh powder on the leeward trailsides, death cookies, dark swaths of bulletproof ice, and exposed bare rock as well as frock fragments strewn about here and there. Lower Cloudspin was closed and had nothing skiable on it. Parons was in good shape.
Then we cut over to get to the mid mountain lodge to meet up with friends for lunch. We discovered on the way over that Lower McKenzie had snow guns blasting and there was a nice depth of mandmade snow that was delicious after chattering down the firm and variable surfaces from the Summit. After lunch we decided to do a few laps there and enjoy the new manmade snow. It was definitely the best thing going.
They had made snow on Wilderness the day before, so there was some nice moguls forming, though some were spaced with glare ice.
After 3 or 4 more laps of these, we called it a day. I went with some other friends and our dogs on the Northville-Placid Trail for 2 hours until dark. It was really nice being out in the woods without the crowds. The trail was really fun though there were some thin spots and some protruding granite. This past snowfall was helpful to the Adks but they could still use another foot.
That night they relit the Olympic torch and had fireworks which we could see from the living room window. We stayed at the Skier-T house which is available to rent and sleept 10 people, though we had like 16 people with some on airmattresses. If anyone is interested in renting this house I can hook you up with the owners. They are very cool and the house is dog-friendly, and they won't get upset if you pack in your friends.
