Day 1 of a 6 day trip. Super Sunday promotion for St. Patrick's Day - $40 lift tickets. Crowded (for Whiteface) so I spent most of the day avoiding the busy gondola line up. The temps pretty cold - getting sick of skiing wearing a face mask. Trail reports from the hill had 2" of snow over night but the upper mountain parts I skied appeared to have more like 6-8 inches of fairly firm fresh snow. (Not wet enough to be called "packing snow.") Upper Skyward certainly had at least 6+".
I followed a ski patroller through the top of Parons into Upper Cloudspin and it had foot deep drifts on the sides with wind scoured exposed rocks in the middle. This place seems to have a lot of wind scour issues (Hoyts High on the Lookout side is another run that's bad for this.) That being said, the new snow at the top skied really well and by staying on the upper parts of the mountain I managed to have ski on lifts all day long.
Good start to the trip - MRG tomorrow.
