! I must say I had an excellent time. The sun was bright
and there was very little wind. The main trail that was open was Excelsior
which leads to Upper Valley then Lower Valley. Shana and I made two runs
from the Gondola then we switched to the Midstation Shuttle chair for the
rest of the day. As it's name implies it only goes to Midstation but we
felt we were getting more skiing time because there was no wait and a
shorter ride. We would hardly stop moving at the end of a run; just ski up
to the chair and get right on.
Now for a word about the conditions. They were great! The coverage was
good, no bare spots. The snow was just the way I like it, groomed with just
enough looseness to bite into with my edges. The middle of the trail was a
little scraped and hard in places but nothing I couldn't handle. In fact I
purposely went in the middle for practice on the harder stuff. One or two
sections had a bump thing going on so I did a little practicing on that too.
During the two runs we made from the Gondola we often pulled over to let a
wave of faster skiers go by and then start off again. Even though everyone
was using the same trails and there was a big crowd there seemed to be
enough space between the waves for us to not feel like we were about to be
run over. From Midstation down Shana was very proud of me because my speed
improved greatly. At the bottom she turned around to look for me and I was
already there. We lost count of how many Midstation runs we made.
