I closed out my Whiteface season yesterday with a perfectly gorgeous day of spring skiing. There was definitely more terrain open than my first day back on Thanksgiving but it was visibly going fast. They will have an "official" closing on Tue May 1 just to say they did and tickets will be $10 for anyone who shows up and needs one. Major sections of trails and key access points are totally blown out and were in need of the utmost creative maneuvering to get around yesterday. There was no snow at the top of the LWF double so all the advertising they did all week was bogus. They "built" a strip of snow down the last several hundred feet to within 200 ft of the gondola and then it was walking on hay to get to the platform. I did get one top to bottom run in just to get back to the gondola but the lower mountain was not even corn snow but more like semi congealed slop. Ironically, the temperatures were quite cool. I imagine it was a tad chilly on Mt. Washington over night. TWC said low single digits. I skied all day in three layers and did not get overheated. Upper trails facing away from the sun were "stiff" for a while in the AM and the woods were bullet proof all day and never softened up.
