Whiteface Mt. NY- March 26-29
What can I say? It just doesn’t get much better than this in late March—or maybe any other time of the year. Skied for 3 days at Whiteface, it snowed two of them. Everything on the mountain was open except for the Slides. The only reason they were closed were due to avalanche danger. The snow report was pretty accurate- 3’ at the bottom and 7-8’ at the top. The longest lift line was about 4 people. On Monday we got about 2-4” of new powder at the top towards early afternoon. It flurried all day Tuesday with the result being about 6” of fresh light stuff up top, maybe 2” at the bottom. Our favorite runs were to take the gondola (really nice when its cold and windy) to the top, ski down the 1000’ to the Summit Quad, then go to the top. We only skied Paron’s and the Follies off the top but everything looked good with the new powder. Lot’s of tele’s were skiing just about everything on the mountain. Not sure how they do it. Off the gondola we skied Essex, Excelsior, Connector, Lower Cloudspin, Approach, Mt. Run, etc. etc. etc. No ice to be seen anywhere. My daughter started out a low intermediate but was skiing the easy expert slopes by Wednesday. She was skiing the gondola intermediate runs the first day and went to the top of the mountain on Wednesday.

Whiteface has a real big mountain feel. You can easily spend close to an hour going to the top and back down with a two chairlift ride. I skied Killington and Sugarbush many years ago and have to say I prefer the sking at Whiteface. Of course the excellent snow year helped I’m sure. The biggest thing it could use is a couple more intermediate ways off the gondola and the summit. But, no lines, and a reasonable price. We were able to get 3 day adult tix for me and two teenagers for $80 each, and a $57 ticket for my 10 year old daughter. I didn’t see this price at the ski area but they had it at the hotel in Lake Placid. Looks like the weather report is calling for a warm up this weekend so I’d recommend going sooner rather than later.
