WINTER is here

Just checked for Northern Maine-

NWS Northern Maine Forecast

Looks as if there could be some signifigant snowfall. In addition to Northern Maine getting snow, I'm sure most of the major mountain tops will recieve snow as well.

Boy am looking forward to winter.

The forcast for northern Vermont its looking very much the same as that of Northern Maine. Right now it is only 36 degrees and the smell of snow is in the air! It is supposed to drop into the low/mid twenties tonight. Good snowmaking weather!

Look for at least a foot with up to 16 inches on the higher summits across New England, I'll at the peabody base of cannon sat morning at 6 if anyone is interested!! I have to leave cannon at 11 though, so only a short trip!

Man am I excited

Right now the snow line looks to be between loon and cannon, running somewhere south of houlton maine.

I'll be skiing somewhere if we get that much snow. I'm thinking down here in the lower elevations of the new york northcountry things might not be soo good. Does anyone know what whitefaces policy is on people hiking? or how about any other places in the dacks that are clear enough for early season hiking. I know theres lots of bc but if the cover's thin grassy places will definitely be much better. The old trails at big tupper might be fun too. Anyone know if any of them are still clear. Hmmm options. I just hope we get enough snow to actually do something.

if cannon gets more than a foot, you can count me in!

wa-HOO!!! Ground zero for this storm looks to be Big Rock, ME with up to 1.75" of liquid-equivalent and 850mb temps of at least -4C for the entire event.

Oh cripes, I have 4 nearly-bald tires on my car. Guess I'm going shopping tomorrow night...

Man i'd love to drive over and meet you guys at cannon cause right now it doesn't look like were gonna get much here in the dacks. I just can't justify driving 4.5 hours. Well if you get 10+ inches like i'm seeing right now enjoy it. If something changes I'll be somewhere around here trying to scrounge something but i dunno if were gonna have enough snow. Now that i'm north i'm getting jealous of those east oh well. Our day will come.

Don't know the formal policy, but I'd steer clear of the snowmaking operations that began today.

Definately seems like Winter in Ottawa this morning. It was -4c when I left home at 8am this morning. High for today +4c. We had flurries on Tuesday how here is what Environment Canada is calling for the rest of the week. :) However, I don't like what they are calling for this weekend. :?

Today..Increasing cloudiness. Periods of wet snow beginning this afternoon. High 4.
Tonight..Flurries. Amount 2 cm. Wind becoming northwest 30 km/h near midnight. Low 1.
Friday..A few flurries ending late in the morning then cloudy. Amount 2 cm. Wind northwest 30 km/h gusting to 50. High 4.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday..Cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers. Low 3. High 9.
Sunday..Cloudy. 60 percent chance of showers. Low 4. High 10.
Monday..Cloudy. 40 percent chance of flurries or rain showers. Low 1. High 3.

As much as everyone wants a foot... i think you guys are getting a little too excited...

>>SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE ADIRONDACK AND GREEN MOUNTAINS WILL BE 2 TO 5 INCHES WITH ISOLATED AMOUNTS OF 6 INCHES POSSIBLE. MEANWHILE...ACROSS VALLEY LOCATIONS SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS
WILL BE LESS THAN ONE INCH.<<

Scott has always been very accurate. Maybe I should institute a "porter" rule and divide all my estimates by 3. Ha. Here is to some snow this weekend.

Keywords on this one is "coastal storm" I don't expect the heavy frozen precipitation to reach very far inland at all.

I have four brand-spanking new Nokian Hakka RSI tires being mounted as I type this. AWD+winter tires = not missing any big storms because of bad roads THIS year.

Hey kids!!!

Since it appears winter is making its debut and skiing is about a week away for me, I decided to pop in and say Hi to all my skiing bros and sisters.

wooohooo!! I just can't wait to get on those boards.

This weekend I'll be doing some pre-winter prep work on my land, at our local ski hill and on my skis.

Weds night starts my ski season with the Warren Miller flick, Impact. Once I get those free lift tix in my hot little hands, I'll head out to Kmart and spend a 4 day weekend in VT sampling the early season offerings and visiting friends.

Cheers to the kickoff of a great season!

i just read scott's forecast, and i think porter's estimate may still be doable in select areas. i've seen many many days in which i've driven north on i93 disappointed with snow accumulation then got into the notch and BOOM! snow everywhere. this seems like an outside shot and not good odds, but with a forecast for that region stating up to 8" of snow, i would generally expect cannon to be on the upper end of that due to that crazy notch effect.

the unfortunate downside of the notch effect is the amount of wind and blowing that takes place. so even if 8"+ lands, with high winds it will likely not all stick.

My sentiments exactly...

I'll be there snow or shine.

porter

ps I honestly think the higher summits of the whites still have the potential for 12+, I'll be looking for drifted areas with more snow.

St. Johnsbury picked up about an inch last night. See the picture below. However, it melted by 3 AM this morning :( .
Here in St. Johnsbury at noontime it is snow quite hard but it is not accumulating due to above freezing temps here in the valley (~600 ft). I'm sure Burke is receiving measureable snow at this point :) .
