2022-23 Season Recap

my max in one calendar month was 19 in March 2019 and again in March 2023. As for most in a 31 day period I knew it had to be one of those retirement road trips. I skied 27 out of 31 days
I managed to survive 30 out of 31 days in a month while working in Tahoe back in the day. I had to beg my boss to get the one day off that I did get that month. And about 1/3 of those days started at opening bell starting with Nastar, then USSA coaching in the afternoon, then went until 8p at night running beer league races for the locals.

Multiple times in the mid-20's out of 31 days in my ski life. Esp College was easy to achieve that as I had 5 weeks off from just before Christmas to nearly Feb for the semester break. Odd scheduling, but that's what they did at the time back in the day at Bucknell.

Yea, my daughter had a somewhat similar schedule when she was in college in Minnesota. They were on trimester system and the first trimester ended right before Thanksgiving; then, they would have the entire month of December off and they would start up again in the first week of January, so she had about a 6-week break. Someone told me the college did that because it was always so dark and cold in December in Minnesota that many of the kids became depressed, so the college just gave up on holding classes in December. I figured it was maybe a way to save on heating (and lighting) costs during a dark and cold month, but who knows?

That is a better calendar than most colleges on a trimester/quarter system.

Generally, the fall semester at a quarter school (UCLA, UCSD, Stanford, UW, Dartmouth, etc.) is a late September start, a Thanksgiving with finals/papers hanging over your head, and a finish in early December with no reading period. And December is not really a great 'time off' with impending holidays - especially for travel and/or skiing. (I might have gotten a trip to Jay, MRG, or Stowe if they had been a freak storm.)

Grad school with a January break was much more enjoyable.

Undergrad friends with January breaks could piece together some decent skiing even if just local in New England or West Coast. One friend went to visit her Swiss relatives in Gstaad in January.

Yea, I forget the exact dates but I believe my daughter would start the first or second week in September and the first trimester would end before Thanksgiving; then she would have 5 or 6 weeks off, through Christmas and New Year's (avoiding the cold and dark month of December in Minnesota), and then begin the second trimester in early January and it would end in the middle of March. She would then have a week's vacation and the third trimester would then go from late March to late May and she would be done for the Summer. I believe she had to take 3 courses each trimester, so a total of 9 classes during the entire academic year. I thought it was good way to do the academic year.

Growing up in Horseheads, skiing at Greek Peak, college in Bucknell: you may have more Rust Belt gravitas than me!
Probably never mentioned it, but also Grad school in Buffalo, the ultimate rust belt location! And that was after spending some time in California and Seattle! Something in that rust belt water I guess.

That is a better calendar than most colleges on a trimester/quarter system.
In comparison Bucknell was (probably still is) on a semester system, but a handful of professors stuck around and offered "Jan Plan" super concentrated courses where in 4 weeks you could pop out one course/credit if you were up for it and if it happened to be offered. Start late Aug, done before Christmas; Jan break/Jan Plan, start up ~feb 1 and done for the summer ~June 5th or so.

San Jose State University has been on semester system for a long time. When I went there finals for the Fall semester were before Christmas and the 2nd semester did not start until late January giving you at least 3 weeks in January to go skiing.

I went on inexpensive trips to Aspen with their ski club beginning in 1978. The first year may have been under $300 for flight to Grand Junction and bus transfer, 7 nights in downtown hotel (4 to a room at the old Limelight at least a couple of years) and 6-day lift ticket (did not include Highlands back then. I paid to ski there on departure day one year).

I also remember staying in large condos near lift 1A base and across road from Snowmass base on other years. In 1982, ski club had four buses go to Sun Valley, getting through Donner Pass just before it closed for multiple days due to storm that resulted in deadly Love Creek slide in Santa Cruz Mountains. (We flew back from Twin Falls.) There used to be overnight party outside Student Union we attended to make sure we got signed up before trips sold out.

My 2022-23 season: 46 days, only 3 more than previous year. 1,061K vertical.
Highest since 2018-19 when I had 65 days (that was my only year over 56).
Four new ski areas, first ones for me since Castle and Fernie in 2018. My area total is 86.
Averaged slightly over 23K vertical/day, even with lowest ever vertical at Mustang.

Based on how regularly your reports seemed (to me) to be posted, I would've guessed closer to 60 days!
Only 46 days, but every day I skied in Dec, Jan and 2 of 3 in Mar had new snow. 19 or 20 powder days for season.

I had to balance skiing and having wife who has not skied since her head injury in January 2022. She has not given it up, but has a lot of reservations about going again. She has a Basic Ikon pass for next season that cost $20 after deferring full Ikon pass from this season (due to injured finger) and $50 credit from limited use during first COVID season.

Some of the months with low number of ski days included trips with her to other places.
Dec - 2 Two nights in Paso Robles. Went to Sensorio there and dinner in San Luis Obispo to celebrate her birthday.
Jan - 5 Puerto Vallarta for a week for our anniversary.
Mar - 3 Two nights in Santa Rosa for California Artisan Cheese Festival

My season is finally done and recap post updated.

The last three summer ski days were previously unskied dates. Here is my list of lifetime ski days by calendar date.

I have taken the liberty to correct Patrick's post for my skiing more days in March. When Patrick and I first compared ski dates we were very close in the 230's I think. But that was in 2013, and he's had 10 more years of streak since then.

My table above reflects my priorities, with the conspicuous peak around Iron Blosam Week dates. The secondary bulge is in late February, when I have done the majority of my Canadian cat/heli trips: 8 at Mustang, 3 at Island Lake, one to Revelstoke in 1999 and one at Mike Wiegele in 2006.

Other frequent ski dates are in late January/early February: a few other Canadian trips plus recent Alps trips. Late March was when Adam's spring breaks were while growing up. Patrick's missing end of May is a frequent time for me due to Mammoth opening lots of lifts and terrain for Memorial weekend. That also results in a big gap for me in early June when Mammoth's gondola is closed for annual maintenance.
