A GIFT FROM THE AIRLINE GODS TO JACKSON HOLE

I've never found flights from Newark to Jackson for less than the mid $400s... that's why FF awards were invented.

Feel free to press that "caps lock" thing on your keyboard.

Oh... Jackson Lame. I prefer to spend my time at Alta. Jackson past mid february is just plain old crappy. Airfare to Denver right now is about 250, my guess is SLC is about 280/320.

Not sure why anyone would book airfare that far in advance for skiing unless it was group/family thing. Fairly easy to watch the weather, wait for favorable conditions and get reasonable airfare these days . Does a cheap airline ticket justify subpar conditions

Bingo! That's why I normally wait till the season starts to shape up before I put any money down.

Man... you guys are in a bad mood. :sabre fight: Yes, the JH trip in early Feb is for family visit as well as skiing. I am hitting Alta / Snowbird in January and then Summit County CO (jumping off a business trip to ski) in late February and then going to Silverton in the second week of March for the first time. It's very hard to burn FF miles to ski destinations during the season unless you want to sleep overnight in an airport. SORRY ABOUT THE CAP LOCK

I beat :dead horse: about the Jackson Hole exposure as much as anybody, but yes, this is a tough crowd today. I was going to hold my fire until I found out when in February. Early Feb. is a reasonable speculation considering he's getting a deal. I'd only :brick: if he had booked in March. Ideal would be to flip the order of the JH and AltaBird trips, but that's nitpicking especially with family considerations.

With the state of the economy this is probably a more viable strategy than in many past seasons. Though I have read that the arilines have slashed flights so proportion of empty seats has not increased much.

ANYONE THAT WOULD BOOK A FLIGHT MORE THAN TEN DAYS IN ADVANCE IS RETARDED. I BOOKED UTAH 7 DAYS OUT LAST APRIL FOR 275- MANCH NH TO SLC R/T WITH ALL TAXES AND AN EXTRA BAG. MAN, THIS CAPS LOCK FEELS GOOD TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! :stir:

Shames topic isn't going any nicer. I've even managed to piss off Frankontour on ZSki when I took exception to his topic about Silverton having the first powder shoots of the year.

OKAY, YOU CAN CONTINUE SHOUTING!!!

Anyone who thinks powder predictions are worth anything 10 days out is ??????? If that's what you want (we know it is in icelantic's case) your reliable lead time is more like 3-5 days. There aren't many times an airline will give you a deal on that short notice. I think james scored a short notice deal to SLC late March last year, but it may have been with FF miles.

But the general sentiment expressed here is valid. You don't need to book a Feb/Mar flight in October. If you book in Dec/Jan you can at least know if there's enough snow on the ground.

I actually think that it's fairly tepid and civil over there, given the quality of some of the arguments that are being tossed around.

Obviously, this must be a travel agent forum and not a ski forum. ](*,) Everyone seems to know how to book cheap flights and guarantee epic onditions every time. Frankly, my purpose for booking well in advance is because I have to get my calendar cleaned well in advance for my job. I also have two small children and a horse farm, so leaving for a ski trip entails planning well in advance. That's another reason why I do most of my skiing out West. I don't have the time screw around with sketchy East Coast conditions. To plan a trip so far in advance and get rain or ice is not a fun time. I have a much better chance of getting good conditions out West. A good day out West is an Epic day in the East.

Before the easterners :brick: please recall Bluebird Day lives in Philly, not Vermont. His opinion is 99% correct based on the reality of his situation. If the dates are locked for family/work reasons it may also have made sense to book the air when it was dirt cheap. But for someone doing 3 western trips, I suspect one or two of them ought to be held off committing where until snow is on the ground.

Tony -

Wouldn't you agree that from 10 days out you can at least time a favorable pattern or storm cycle? If you pull the trigger on a 5 day trip to, say, Utah when all the NWS offices are honking about a major pattern change favoring western snows, I think you're reasonably likely to get some powder days.

As a general rule, no. There are probably some situations like January 2008 where it was dumping so consistently over such a widespread area that the odds of it persisting another week or two were pretty good.

Tony, Thanks for the backup Tony. I was setting myself up for a :brick: .

Anyway, the main issue here is $310 to Jackson Hole! Typically, I can find that rate to SLC, but to get from SLC to JAC, a 50 minute flight, can cost an aditional $200 at times. The change / cancellation fee for the flight is $60. That's a cheap hedge as far as I'm concerned. :dead horse:

BD, frankly I would've done the same thing. Tell these guys to go pound sand.
