Alta/Snowbird, UT 2/27/08

Yea, Corbett's doesn't look all that difficult when looking at photos taken from below. It looks much more intimidating when you're standing at the top of Corbett's looking down into the abyss, knowing you've got a 10 to 15 drop straight down and then have to make some quick turns to avoid smashing into the rock walls. I know - I've been there and chickened out.

I agree..thats one scary entrance...theres never been enough snow when ive been there to give it a try...one day maybe.

Good point here though...if you dont feel comfortable backing out is the BEST option.

Wow that TGr stuff is unreal! I thought the pics where great.
I dropped Corbetts in Feb 2003 on a snowboard. The entry was not particulary big maybe 10ft. I didn't find it diffcult and I don't consider myself a Rockstar like many on TGR. I have actually had more undy wetting skiing Galaxy 5 in delirium dive, and some shoots in Lake Louise back side. I will be donning some skis to get to Alta here in a few weeks, don't know if I will fell comfy enought to ski Main shoot until I get some "ski" days in.
Question for you Utah guys, what is like that at snowbird that I can get into on the board? I hit Charmonix chutes but most of it was either blown up or roped off. Perviunin was closed the entire time I was there. And I rode most everyother doupble black on the gad/Gadzoom etc side.

TRam. shots in the Upper Peruvian Cirque like Great Scott, Jaws, Shot 10 and Elevator will give you a taste.

Basically, if you can do Corbet's, Main Chute is simple by comparison. I understand the diff between board and skis, but Main is much more forgiving - it's wider, not quite as steep, and no mandatory air.

Admin- I saw a few of those from the tram, right? Looked nasty and exposed, it was early Jan and the weather cond made everything seem to just go on into the abyss, simalar to when I was at Sunshine in Deliurum wher it was foggy at times and unerving.

Marc C- Corbetts is by no means as long correct, maybe 300 ft. in the chute? Also if you check out some Corbetts vidio on you tube you see some where you can almost slide/skirff the cirque at an angle and drop in that way. When I was ther there was a natural groove where you cut acrooss the face and that lowered the drop by like 5ft. You still need to be aggresive. I also went there a few times in the summer and you get a different perspective on it. Kind of like Skidog was talking about snow loading and snow amounts change the height and pitch of these typew of cornice shots.

Corbet's is pretty long -great north facing snow for 1000 ft after the jump.

The vertical - whether your skis are touching or not - is still pretty substantial resulting in acceleration. Note the rock that needs to be avoided this spring day.

And this guy did not stop, and slammed into something after me. Note sled and patrol in chute. (Patrol has a rope to lower themselves and sleds into Corbet's).

But I still really dislike Jackson:
Unusable vertical due to lift system, tram with 1 hr lines standard, little north terrain, sun, crud, frozen bumps, and paid parking. The best things about Jackson - Hobacks, Lower Faces, Moran, Saratoga can be awful half the time.

Note the Southeast exposure:

Nice pics, the guy who had the pics of our day had shutter speed real slow and all the pics where to blurry to even look like a ski hill. I thought the chute was only rated to the end of the rock on skiers right where it opens up. Can't be more then 300 to that.
Sorry to highjack the thread BTW.

Not that it took me 2 weeks to respond let alone it will take 3 weeks to recover from the trip in general. I would like to chime in here. The day at Alta was one of the most memorable i have had on boards. Great day with skidog and long overdue and bob dangerous was the perfect guide and could not have provided a better tour of altabird. It was a bluebird day and the snow was like velvet. Admin was not joking that snow evaporates at these conditions. It was crazy. If you don't have 24" of fresh these are the conditions to have, especially for a gaper like me from the east coast. Honestly Admin was nicer on this in the post then in person because he would not let up on the flatlander from pennsultucky but I think i held my own

This was the first day of an 8 day trip and honestly I could have gone home after the day I had at Alta with these guys and been totally and completely satisifed. This trip was one that was bittersweet for me due to losing my closest brother and ski partner this past summer. He always said we have to ski Alta together and we never got the chance to until last week.

As admin stated the ride to Jackson that night ended with an offical greeting from the Teton County Sheriff with nothing more than a warning (dam rental car company) Jackson provided great skiing with little fresh and we had close to 30" over 3 days in Slowboat.

Can't wait to get back to Alta and keep up the good work guys; living the dream.

Hey, TJ! Welcome! I hope that you'll participate often.

And hey, it was easy for me to be hard on you...you'd been chasing Bobby D all day when I just showed up for the afternoon.
