I'll start today's report now, as it's gonna be a long slow drive up LCC this morning!

I know we've gone back and forth about this before -- that you like to ski with your group and that you go somewhere other than Alta/Snowbird only for exceptional reasons -- but is there a point where you look at the traffic ahead of you and say "screw this"... and try a different ski area for the day??

Put my 1/23 post under the 1/22 thread. Was able to drive right up. Of course it was a bit earlier...

We ended up at Solitude, looking forward to the Alta pics. We had an amazing day until an out of control skier ran into to me while I stood in line for the Summit lift, I reaching into a pocket and he hit me really hard while I wasn't looking. MRI on Monday and no skiing tomorrow. I'm pretty bummed.

But as I imagine Alta was, it was a good deep day. Look closely, I'm in there somewhere.

socal, I'm so sorry to hear!! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Jamesdeluxe: I was in stop and go for 1 mile from the Wasatch/9400 S interchange to the Sheriff's checkpoint at the mouth of the canyon. After that it was 40 mph up the canyon. No biggie. No regrets at all. You're quarterbacking from 2,500 miles away, a la Crocker. I pulled into the lot 5 minutes before opening. Days like these with friends are priceless.

The biggie was the fact that all gates were closed, sticking a healthy weekend crowd on limited terrain. No worries for us, though, for we knew where to go. Jason declared it the best snow he's ever skied...and he's visiting from Denver!

I even found a hidden chute today that in five years as a regular, I never even knew it was there.

I'm trying something new: for the full slideshow from the day I'll have the reader download a 21.3 MB file:

I guess my disclaimer (that we've already gone through this before: i.e. Crocker's "you should have" from thousands of miles away) wasn't clear enough. I was just curious what, if anything, would cause you to turn around on a deep day like that and go elsewhere. There was no right or wrong answer.

day 29 it's hard to put bliss into mere words. i got right up the canyon there may have been ten cars ahead of me when the sheriff opened the road. some of these pictures were taken on whats called the condo run between alta and snowbird.out on the true north end of the baldy ridge line. skied one run at snowbird and back to alta lines were monsterious not so bad at alta. closures - backside period -ballroom - devils castle completely- all snowbird gates- cathrines bowl -mineral basin for three days now ( terra forming going on in there ) - little cloud bowl (west of little cloud chair) including rassta chutes and whoopies area you get the picture alot of mecca will truely be mecca when it's opened hopefully today !!

I sit here right now tapping my fingers and redialing the phone every 90 seconds. My kid comes home last night as the snow is starting to pile up. Has a flat tire on his car, begs and pleads to use my truck as he's supposed to be going out with his girlfriend. I reluctantly hand him my keys, and also toss him my credit card, telling him to top off the fuel tank as I need it for this morning. I make him promise over and over again to be careful with the truck.

I get up at 6 a.m. No kid, no truck. I call his cell phone - straight to voicemail. Worst of all, my skis are in the back of the truck. I'm gonna f'ing kill him.

Looks like today might one of those days where the lucky people who stayed up in LCC last night before interlodge score some country club skiing. I'm sure you locals all saw the update saying that LCC is now estimated to open at 9:30 b/c a large slide is blocking the road.

So, question is, is today a BCC day?

So?...what is the news? I hope the lad is OK and home safe with your Skis & Truck intact...is he still breathing?

No, judging by the huge conga line that was heading up BCC at 9:15. I'm hoping that this delay will take some of the pressure off LCC today. The road is said to be open, but we're not moving yet. I'm fortunately 200 yds from the mouth of the canyon.

Probably. LCC opened at 9:35 and then promptly closed again at 10. The email from the SLCo Sheriff's office reads:
"LCC is now closed again. No est opening time. Please exit the canyon ASAP "

Alta site:
LCC Road Temporary Closure: Estimated opening at 11:00 AM Please stand by. At this time, Alta Ski Area will open around noon. We are getting more information and will update this message. The Town of Alta is under interlodge restrictions.

Snowbird and Sheriff's office:
The canyon road is closed due to avalanche control work. There is no estimated time of re-opening.
