both roads closed so far this a.m. looks like some foothill skiing may be in order.

Yeah, Alta went into Interlodge at 6 am. However, they're predicting a road opening at 8:30 so I think I'll hold out for that rather than head to the Back.

well put james, much better than my words, exactly what i'm talkin bout. enjoy targhee, wyoming's solitude. other skiers will make eye contact or say hello as they ski by or say excuse me if they're trying to get by, a lost art in some parts.
thanx

admin,i'll be at einsteins fort union at 745 waiting for road opening

I spent nearly 20 years as an Alta skeptic. The 1 hour liftlines at Christmas 1986-87 left a quite strong impression. But I've been skiing Alta with admin on a March Saturday the past 3 seasons since Collins went high speed, and I'm willing to admit that things have changed. I think Alta's skier visits actually declined from the 1980's to early 2000's; I wonder if they have gone back up with the improved lifts.

Stuck at Alta Lodge with the road closed and the lifts open, the ultimate of any ones dream.
No doubt about this one. I still hear from Al Solish about the Wednesday at Snowbird with the LCC road closed. And I also have no doubt that just skiing refills on Wildcat under those conditions would be great.

I've never understood why people rag on an area because of who skis there. Vail is another classic example of this. If the terrain and lifts are configured so that you can get at the kind of skiing you want most of the time, I'm happy. Before Collins, Alta on a weekend or holiday was unacceptable to me. Now, I can hit admin's out-of-the-way stashes on a more regular basis and I'm fine with it. Similarly at Jackson Hole, the schmucks who want to look cool can stand in hour long tram lines all day for all I care while Patrick and I were were skiing untracked on the lower faces, Moran Woods, etc.

I do agree with the principle that at the very peak periods, you're likely to get a more rewarding experience at a secondary area. Like we did at Powder Mt, Snowbasin and Solitude last President's weekend. Of course a "secondary area" in Utah is often better than a marquee area in many other regions.
