Day 48: Shoulda been there tomorrow
Today's storm was slower than expected to develop. While forecast to begin after 10 pm last night it really didn't get underway until 5 am this morning. And the moist southerly flow favors other places, while Little Cottonwood Canyon will benefit most from the second half of the storm and the related lake effect on the storm's back side. Tomorrow, therefore, should be the day.
Damned work.
Tele Jon, however, promises to pack down all that new snow for me tomorrow. In addition to Jon, I was skiing today with Skidog, his new friend Mike (TGR contact, from Wisconsin), FTO pseudo-lurker Marcski and Marcski's father-in-law Ken (both from NY), and for a period this morning Skierpeter. Marc_C and Amy both made cameo appearances but we couldn't seem to stick together today.
The snow falling today had the tiniest crystals I've ever seen, so even though it snowed all day it didn't add up to a lot. In most places it was enough to make the crust beneath tolerable. In some places, most notably Catherine's it added up to a good six inches, enough to bury the crust. That's why after lunch we lapped three Catherine's shots in a row, including one traverse out beyond Tuscarora to Patsy Marley proper. Tirolerpeter, we're not sure what happened to you on that first Catherine's lap -- I saw you when we clicked back into our skis and none of us saw you again.
Those three p.m. runs took the last of the wind out of my sails, verified by a last run down Thirds. Rubber-legged, I called it a day at 2:45 along with Skidog and Tele Jon, while the visitors went back up for more.
With low visibility and flat light I took only one series of photos today, in the Garage Aspens:
