Australia and NZ 2024

In other news we Brisbogans are in the middle of a relatively uncommon winter rain event. Mean rainfall for the month of August is under two inches. We should get 5 inches over this three day period. Score!

You have the Summer Olympics in Brisbane in 2032?

Hopefully Tom Cruise will be too old for a narcissistic repeat. And I can do without Snoop Dog. Really - $500k/day for his nonsense?
However, I did enjoy Colin Jost getting flesh-eating (or similar) bacteria in Tahiti.

Paris was a beautiful Olympic games! Well done! Basically flawless- except summer opening rains.

I have done Rio and Athens. Cheap stuff in Athens, some diving/athletics in Rio.

I think the Internet wants Australian B-girl Raygun to be back in the Olympics!

She’s special.

And it’s amazing how Australia can out produce every Western nation on a medal per capita basis. By like 5-50x

We do. Unfortunately. Our city/state can't afford it and it will likely throw more fuel on the already crazy property prices. Don't get me started on that topic.

The internet might but the Australian taxpayer who was scammed to get her to the Olympics probably doesn't.

Yeah pretty impressive I suppose. I guess we throw dollars and resources at sports. A climate that allows outdoor activity year round helps too?

Brisbane is a relatively small city that would likely need to build or invest heavily in infrastructure to host an Olympic Games. It seems like an odd choice, given the recent selection of megacities from wealthy countries with either sports and/or Olympic infrastructure: Tokyo, Bejing, Paris, Los Angeles, Milan-Cortina, Salt Lake City, etc.

I thought that after Athens and Rio de Janeiro, the IOC would avoid cities/countries that might go bankrupt themselves in the process.

You must have some ex-Soviet or East German coaches. More seriously, Australia excels in many summer sports. It even ranked fourth in medals at the Sydney 2000 Games.

Breaking was kicked out of future Summer Games. It was such a trainwreck - its departure was announced before the Paris Games started.

It's always a puzzle for me to understand the dynamics of how Olympic sports are added and removed.

Five new sports are coming to LA28, including Baseball/Softball, Lacrosse and Cricket returning to the Olympic program, and Flag Football and Squash are making their Olympic debut.

So, baseball disappeared for a while?
Flag football?

I saw they are adding Mountaineering to the Winter Games in the Dolomites. That's a grueling sport not made for TV: who will watch teams for more than a couple of seconds/minutes skinning up a mountain? I will watch Peacock highlights - like Surfing. It's quite boring to watch surfers just sitting waiting for waves and trying to jostle each other for position.

I have done, no surprise, L.A. 1984 and Salt Lake 2002. There's a big advantage to seeing an Olympics without paying high priced lodging and having one's own car to get around in familiar territory. This will be sbooker in 2032!

I attended swimming, diving, soccer, baseball, archery, track & field and 2 volleyball games. The highest profile event was the men's volleyball final. SoCal is a volleyball hotbed and I played quite a bit for 20+ years though my natural talent is very limited.

For Salt Lake 2002 I did better with tickets and the quality of skiing was icing on the cake.

I have noticed this for a long time, and I think vs. all nations.

Yes you do. In 1997 we got a tour of the Olympic training facility in Canberra.

Yes, I wonder what Brisbane will have to build? More than Sydney had to in 2000 I guess. L.A. must be ideal in that regard. I recall no new sports venues for 1984, just a few temporary ones as in Paris. Since then L.A. metro has added two new basketball arenas for the NBA and another one for USC, two MLS soccer stadiums plus SoFi, a $5 billion NFL facility that will have the opening ceremony.

In 1984 L.A. rushed to get a new international terminal open at LAX. This time they are building a people mover train at LAX to serve rideshare and car rental lots and connect to the skeletal light rail network.

Our situation for 2028 is very annoying. There's a 5 minute total solar eclipse in Australia July 22, which also presents an opportunity for Liz to join me as a 7 continent skier. No Summer Games since 1960 have opened before July 23 except for Montreal July 17 and Atlanta July 19. But L.A. 2028 will be July 14-30. :icon-evil::icon-evil::icon-evil:

Australia is the new East Germany. In the best positive way. Talk about over-achieving. Unproportional wins! Top 5!

In my late 20s/30, around 2005, I always thought, "Australia is the Dream that California no longer achieves."

It had so many beach towns, coastlines, etc.

(I tried to get a job in Sydney after business school - FinTech - no!, But I did do a Spring Break in Sydney that was epic!)

Really not a good year in Australia.
Buller last day is Sept 1.
