Seconded. I'm voting for the new camera as well, though with less pressure. Replacement by next season would be OK for me so you don't rush yourself. Plus a couple of new pocketable with big zoom and etc.. models will be coming out in april/may time frame.

Tony, why do you need a wide angle lens? Were you planning on taking pictures of your hotel rooms, or the inside of a boat?

The 28mm wide-angle is routine for scenic pics. It was what I missed most vs. prior film cameras with the first digital S30 I used for 4 years.

I have the view voiced by ESMC. It will be resolved by next season. I did get all the settings reset to original last night. If the camera is still bad this trip, I can have it formally tested in Irvine, then determine whether it's worth fixing. I am frustrated because Canon makes numerous ultracompacts that are very well regarded, like rfarren's SD1000. My SD800 is almost the exact same design and was just fine until my mishap last April. #-o

I admit to being picky about the convenience factor. I do tend to carry a lot of stuff, and I really like the size of the SD800 camera for skiing. Just to give admin another :brick: to throw at me, a bigger camera is more of a PITA in my North Face suit than in the new ski jacket. That said, the G5 would be a very nice camera, and I'd rather deal with the larger size of that (and get better optics) than give up the viewfinder if it comes to that.

if carry a lot of stuff just wear a small backpack or the infamous fanny pack :D, then you could get a larger camera

I nearly always carry a day pack, but unlike Patrick I'm unwilling to take it off every time I want a picture.

Which is where the right pack, not a school bag  , makes the difference. Most ski packs worth their minimal weight will have a top pocket with a zipper behind your head. You don't need to be a contortionist to remove a camera from that pocket. That's what I do with the Canon S3 IS. And when it's time for a hike longer than 5 minutes you have a ski carry system to make life more pleasant, too.

The Patrick you're talking about is the pre-2007 camera pack scenario. I got the perfect setup just prior to the first SA trip. A Perfect pack for a real camera, not the camera that you can find in a cereal box which fits in perfectly in pockets.

If I was to replace my SD600, I would probably go for the SD890 with 5X zoom (37-185 mm equivalent) lens and viewfinder on sale at Amazon for $199. I'd rather have 5X zoom than wide angle.

Funny, I am the opposite. We bought a Panasonic LX-3 right before our Grand Canyon trip for - in strong part - its 24mm wide angle, but it has a paltry 2x something zoom. For whatever reason, I rarely used zoom on my previous camera, which I believe may be the model (Canon SD800) producing all those wonderful '70s greeny bleached images. Of course, the LX-3 is a bit big and pricey, so I take the Canon snowboarding.

No, this is what camera should Tony buy thread. Come on, go to Best Buy and buy a 100$ point and shoot, problem solved.

anybody go to baldy today?
Garry considered it, but with reported 2 inches new and cool temps, he took a pass on what would likely have been dust-on-crust. Probably best to wait for it to warm up again.

By the way, I've got 3 passes to Baldy; not sure if I'll use them or not. Anyone wanna buy them for say $15 each? Good anyday.

Also on a completely unrelated topic, anyone else notice they opened the MVP up again at Mammoth? Figure I will probably get in 4 days or so this year (and the pass is good for April till the end of this year) so it's almost a no brainer.

Important enough subject for new topic: https://www.firsttracksonline.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=7786

Let's keep this one on Baldy. As for my camera situation, :dead horse:

Wateraman was more like 1-3 ". The first go around had fluff in the mogul troughs so you could pick a good line for a while.(the moguls were getting quite large by the days end) Temps warmed up nicely in the afternoon to soften and cornify things up a bit . There's still good coverage inbounds (1-4' I'd guess) , though spots are starting to want to show through. Top was nicely groomed as was about 1/2 of the face of Robyn's
