BC conditions near Jay or Franconia

Hey all, it looks like Cannon and Jay were good little children this year and got some unexpected snow after the r*** on Christmas. But, I'm a little concerned about the off-trail conditions when I read between the lines on their trail reports. Has anyone been doing any backcountry in these areas in the last day or two? How's it looking out there? Enough snow for some decent turns? At least enuogh for some nordic touring?

Thanks for the help.

Not exactly the same area, but I did a lot of inbound off-trail just a little bit northern, in the townships, yesterday (sat) at Shefford.

It's a low elevation, so it should be about the same snow than on upper elevations, southern...

Lots of snow in the woods. 24" of fresh in one particular glade.

The depth is still amazing, I would say over 40" so even southern, it's sure that there is some super backcountry (or at least touring) to do.

It was even easily possible to take the big off-trail walls of the mountain. The snow/rain really stuck on the rocks and the cliffs, so there is some steeps with real snow steeper than what I ever seen. It's rare to see some 50+ degrees chutes in the east where the snow doesn't slide down when someone ski it.

A-non... saturday i was at cannon and took the obligatory hike to my shrine of skiing. mittersill got about a foot of fresh after the rain, and it showed! i got occasional knee deep on barron's run... BUT also sustained heavy base damage and a core shot to boot! also went down hard two or three times after hitting some nasty stuff... and landed on rock or tree or both. ouch!

suffice to say, when i returned to cannon on sunday for more turns... another trip to mittersill was not taken! take it for what it's worth as your milage may vary depending on where you're looking to make some turns. after today's warm weather, even the untracked snow will be less than a foot with NO base.

Got an email from someone who skied Big Jay on the 27th, and it sounded like it doesn't get any better. With the changeable weather, though, the snow is changing by the minute.

was at jay on saturday. great snow in the woods. i would say they have close to a 3 foot base in the woods. didnt hit one rock, tree, all day long. they got close to 2 feet thurs/fri, but the lifts were on wind hold all day friday. saturday winds stopped, sun came out, in my 25 years of skiing one of my top five days in the east.
